Chalets on the Place de l'Hôtel de Ville
You step off the train at Esch-sur-Alzette and the Red Lands mining basin closes in around you — the town that grew from iron ore, now lit for December. Walk up to the Place de l'Hôtel de Ville and you'll find the Escher Krëschtmoart: wooden chalets arranged on the square, free to enter, run by the City of Esch-sur-Alzette. It is not a market with centuries behind it. Alderman Pim Knaff has called it "a very local market," and that is precisely its character — a few dozen food and craft stalls (24 in 2025, five of them new), weekend entertainment, and a Glühwein pyramid that in 2022 held 50 seats with roughly 100 standing places around it. Order a Glühwäin, the Luxembourgish mulled wine, and stand at the pyramid rather than hurrying through.
What Happens While You're There
The market runs for a few weeks from mid-November into the third week of December — in 2025, from Friday 14 November to Sunday 21 December, opening at 7pm on the first night with free mulled wine poured from 7pm to 8.30pm. Concerts and entertainment fill every Friday, Saturday and Sunday until closing. The St Nicholas parade is the set piece for children: in 2025 it wound through the streets of Esch on Sunday 30 November at 2.30pm, with sweets and chocolates handed out along the route. Expect the same shape of programme each year, with exact dates published closer to the time.

Hours, and How the Day Fits Together
The last detailed hours published were for 2022 — Sunday to Thursday 12pm–8pm, Friday and Saturday 12pm–10pm — and these are the pattern to plan around until 2026 hours appear. A half-day on Christmas Eve itself falls after the market's usual closing date, so treat the run-up — the weekends of Advent, the St Nicholas parade, the concert evenings — as the season you are actually visiting. Check the city agenda at citylife.esch.lu and the Visit Luxembourg listing for the current year's dates, or call the Esch tourist office on +352 54 16 37.
Getting There, and What to Eat Nearby
Public transport in Luxembourg has been free since 29 February 2020 — bus, train and tram — with only the French section of cross-border routes paid. CFL line 60 runs from Luxembourg City towards the Red Lands and serves Esch-sur-Alzette; from Metz, take the TER to Luxembourg and connect. By car it is 29 minutes from Thionville, 49 from Metz, and roughly 3h54 from Paris. Note that Audun-le-Tiche in France is the terminus of a CFL line to Esch, but its station has no SNCF trains, so reach it by car or bus. At the market, eat your way through the food stalls — this is where the seasonal cooking is — and if you want a second market on the same line, Differdange has one with an ice rink and carousel, while Luxembourg City's markets sit at the other end of line 60.
- CFL line 60 from Luxembourg City to Esch-sur-Alzette
- Free transport across Luxembourg; French sections paid
- Differdange market — ice rink and carousel — also on line 60
- Thionville and Metz markets on the French side
One Thing to Get Right
Esch-sur-Alzette in southern Luxembourg is not Esch-sur-Sûre, the village in the Luxembourg Ardennes. Check your ticket says the right one before you board.
Start with citylife.esch.lu for the 2026 dates, then book a train into the Red Lands for an Advent weekend — the parade if you have children with you, a concert evening if you don't. The market is small, local and free; the point is to stand on the square with a Glühwäin and let the town's December happen around you.
