Start at the Main Gate on January 1
You arrive at Nagoya Castle before nine in the morning, and the queue already smells of roasted soy flour and warm amazake drifting from the stalls being set up behind you. The gate opens at 9:00 with the Owari Manzai performers of the Imaeda company, a traditional auspicious performing art of this region, and the Nagoya Omotenashi Bushotai — samurai and princess characters, a Tokugawa Ieyasu, and a ninja squad — moving through the crowd in procession. It is worth being early for more than the ceremony: from 9:00 the castle hands out giveaways on a first-come basis, a daruma lottery for the first 758 visitors across the main and eastern gates combined, with eight gold daruma hidden among 750 red, and kaya no mi financier cakes made with nuts from the castle's estimated 600-year-old kaya tree for the first 100 visitors at each gate. At 10:00, head for the Hommaru Palace inner courtyard for Gotenmanzai, the auspicious New Year song. Both the opening ceremony and Gotenmanzai are cancelled in rain.
The Nagoya Castle Winter Festival runs across the New Year period, typically from January 1 to 12 — the 2026 edition ran the full twelve days, while 2025 ran January 1 to 5 — and the 2027 slot is described officially as "January upper to mid," with exact dates usually announced in late November or December. Hours are 9:00–16:30, with last entry to the Hommaru Palace, Southwest Corner Tower and Gozo Johokan at 16:00. This is a daytime festival with no evening illumination. Admission is ¥1,000 for adults, a fee in effect from October 1, 2026, with children of junior high school age and under free; there is no separate event fee and most activities need no booking.
Climb a 17th-Century Tower That Opens Once a Year
The Southwest Corner Tower, the Tatsumi Yagura, is one of three surviving original corner towers from the castle built in 1612 — and it is not open to the public at any other time of year. It opens January 2 to 8, 9:00–16:15 with last entry at 16:00, included in your standard admission. Access conditions can vary with the weather, so treat a clear January morning as your cue.
While you are in the grounds, the Nishi-no-maru Gozo Johokan holds an exhibition running from December into mid-January of Hommaru Palace barrier paintings from the Taisho period, including the city-designated Kyogen Emaki handscroll, also covered by your admission ticket.
Play the New Year Games in the Western Bailey
From January 1 to 6, the Nishi-no-maru western bailey turns into a traditional games zone: koma-mawashi top spinning, fukuwarai blindfold face-placing, a yabusame archery game, and block-toppling, all suitable from about age four with supervision. Hagoita painting workshops let you decorate a New Year paddle; these are aimed at primary-school age, materials costs may apply, and pre-registration may be required.
The Shachi Shokudo food stalls run 9:00–16:30 through the same days, and this is where you eat: ozouni rice cake soup, kishimen — Nagoya's flat wheat noodles — amazake, the warm sweet low-alcohol rice drink, and castle-themed items. Between bites, Aichi-based performers Goto Ryo and Mr. YU give street performances daily from 10:00 to 16:00.
Bring the Children for the Stamp Rally, Stay for the Swordsmanship
January 10 to 12 is the children's stamp rally, 9:00–14:00, based at the Nishi-no-maru Gozo Johokan. Children of junior high school age and under collect stamps at cultural property and scenic points around the castle, and completers receive an original pin badge. It is free with admission but limited to the first 200 children per day, so arrive before 10:00.
On January 12 at 13:00, the Hommaru Palace inner courtyard hosts a Yagyu Shinkage-ryu demonstration by the Yagyu-kai association — one of the oldest documented Japanese sword schools still practised. Hyogo-no-suke Toshikage was recruited by Tokugawa Yoshinao, the first Owari Tokugawa lord, as domain sword instructor, and the session includes both history and technique explanation and a live performance. It is free with admission and cancelled in rain.
Plan Around the Castle, and Know the Rhythm
- Getting there: Shiyakusho Station on the Meijo Line, Exit 7, is a five-minute walk; the Nagoya Castle city bus stop is also five minutes away. The castle can be reached by phone at 052-231-1700.
- Crowds: January is lighter than cherry blossom season, and the all-daytime schedule suits families.
- Timing: Arrive before 9:00 on January 1 for the giveaways and ceremony; before 10:00 on January 10–12 for the stamp rally.
- Beyond the festival: Year-round samurai and ninja demonstrations at the castle run on a separate schedule from the festival programming, so check both if that is what you came for.
- Pair it with a walk: The festival pairs naturally with walking routes through the Shikemichi historic district and the old castle town.
