Step Into the Pandal Lights on Shashti
The first evening of Durga Puja in Bengaluru arrives with the smell of phuchka and incense drifting across an open ground, the crackle of a sound system testing Rabindra Sangeet, and the press of a crowd that has been waiting a year for this. On Friday, October 16, 2026, two of the city's largest Bengali communities open their pandals within hours of each other, and you can be inside either one before the evening peaks.
At EBCA Whitefield, branded as the "Maddox Square of Bangalore," the Bodhon, Amantran and Adhibas rituals run 5:57–6:30 PM, followed by the inauguration of the Maddox Square Book Fair — a collection of more than 5,000 Bengali books. Entry is free. The ground sits in Whitefield, reachable from KR Puram, Marathahalli, ITPL and Brookefield.
Across town at Milana Greens, Begur, the Begur Bengali Socio-Cultural Trust opens its pandal with Bodhon and inauguration, the food carnival fires up its 50-plus stalls, and Dandiya Night 1 begins — the first of five. Free pandal entry; Dandiya Nights are ticketed online at begurbengali.in/durga-puja-2026/. Organisers expect 2 lakh+ footfall over the five days. Evening peak is 6–9 PM.
Follow the Ritual Calendar Through the Week
The six days from Shashti to Dashami each carry their own texture. If you can only come once, pick your day by what you want to see.
- Saptami — Sat, Oct 17: At EBCA, Nabapatrika Prabesh, Sthapan and Saptami Puja run 7:41–10:03 AM, with Pushpanjali at 10:05 AM and a live Patachitra demonstration. At Begur, Nabapatrika snan and morning anjali, then a folk-music evening and Dandiya Night 2.
- Ashtami — Sun, Oct 18: The biggest day. EBCA holds Maha Ashtami Puja 6:14–10:03 AM, Pushpanjali 10:05 AM, Kumari Puja, and special bhog 2:00–4:00 PM. Begur runs Pushpanjali and Sandhi Puja, community bhog, a celebrity headliner performance and Dandiya Night 3. Arrive early — Ashtami is when the queues are longest.
- Sandhi Puja — Mon, Oct 19: At EBCA, the Sandhi Puja begins 7:26 AM, Bali Daan at 7:50 AM, Pushpanjali 8:15 AM, with an additional Maha Ashtami Puja 8:14–10:02 AM and Pushpanjali 10:05 AM. Watch 108 diyas lit, then browse the cultural flea and handicraft expo.
- Navami — Tue, Oct 20: EBCA's Maha Navami Puja runs 9:06–9:31 AM, Pushpanjali 9:35 AM, Kumari Puja, special bhog 2:00–4:00 PM, then Dhunuchi Naach and Dandiya Night. At Begur, Maha-aarti and a dhunuchi naach competition precede the Dandiya grand night.
- Dashami — Wed, Oct 21: EBCA's Dashami Puja and Visarjan run 6:14–9:06 AM, Pushpanjali 9:05 AM, then Sindur Khela, Bisarjan and community greetings with sweets distribution and Bijoya Sammilani. Begur closes with Sindoor Khela, a bisorjon procession and a closing ceremony.
Note one calendar quirk if you follow the Panjika: EBCA follows Benimadhab Sil's Full Panjika 1433, which records the goddess arriving on a horse (instability) and departing by boat (prosperity in crops and water).
Eat Your Way Through the Food Carnival
Come hungry and plan to graze. The Begur food carnival's 50+ stalls cover kosha mangsho, ilish, Kolkata biryani, phuchka, kathi rolls, mishti doi and roshogolla, alongside multi-cuisine counters. It opens on Shashti and runs through the festival. At EBCA, the special bhog on Ashtami and Navami is served 2:00–4:00 PM — a sit-down community meal rather than a stall snack, and worth timing your visit around.
Dance, Listen, and Stay Late
Evenings split between culture and celebration. At Begur, Rabindra Sangeet and classical showcases fill the early evening, with folk and contemporary acts taking over at night. The Dandiya Nights run across five nights with live dandiya bands and instructors for beginners in a dedicated arena — Ashtami and Navami nights sell out first, so book ahead. EBCA's Navami brings Dhunuchi Naach alongside its Dandiya Night, and its Sandhi Puja day includes a cultural flea and handicraft expo.
Both venues are built for a crowd: Begur offers wheelchair-accessible routes, a kids' zone, a medical desk, a women's help desk and a pet-friendly programme, plus on-ground car and two-wheeler parking and marked ride-hailing drop points at the main gate. Milana Greens sits 10–20 minutes from Electronic City, Bommanahalli, HSR Layout and Bannerghatta Road.
Plan Around the Two Grounds
Whitefield and Begur sit at opposite ends of the city, so pick your base by which pandal you want to reach at peak hour. If you're coming from the east — KR Puram, Marathahalli, ITPL, Brookefield — EBCA Whitefield is your evening. If you're south — Electronic City, Bommanahalli, HSR Layout, Bannerghatta Road — Milana Greens is the easier run.
