From day two onward, Rishon LeTsiyyon functions as a base for the biggest domestic-travel week of the Israeli year. National parks, trails, museums, zoos and beaches run holiday programming at capacity. Expect attractions to be busiest from late morning to mid-afternoon — go at opening if you want room to move.
- Restaurant sukkahs: Many kosher restaurants build a sukkah for the week, though not all do. Lunch seats go fast. If eating in a sukkah matters to you, call ahead and confirm — the same applies to hashgacha on the kitchen and whether Chol HaMoed meals are actually served in the sukkah.
- Arba minim markets: The pre-holiday markets with esrog inspection are a national phenomenon. If you missed them before the holiday, the energy of the week is still legible in the streets — the lulav and esrog are carried to synagogue daily throughout the festival.
- Chol HaMoed festivals and concerts: Other regions across Israel run Chol HaMoed festivals and concerts, with lineups announced in late summer. Check local listings close to the holiday — specific Rishon LeTsiyyon programming is published in the final weeks before Sukkot rather than months ahead.
Heading to Jerusalem for the Day
Rishon LeTsiyyon sits within easy reach of Jerusalem, and during Chol HaMoed the pull is strong. This is where the country's largest Sukkot events concentrate.
- Birkas Kohanim at the Kotel: Held twice during Chol HaMoed, with crowds in the tens of thousands. Expected dates for 2026 are Monday, September 28 and Thursday, October 1 — the Western Wall Heritage Foundation posts the final schedule closer to the holiday.
- Simchas Beis Hashoeiva: Nightly celebrations during Chol HaMoed, largest in the chassidic courts of Geulah and Meah Shearim.
- The Jerusalem March: A decades-old Chol HaMoed parade through the city center.
- Street hakafos on Simchas Torah: Held in Jerusalem's religious neighborhoods.
Driving into Jerusalem during Chol HaMoed is heavy — intercity roads are congested all week. Once there, walk or use the light rail.
The Week's Closing Notes
The festival doesn't wind down so much as crescendo. On Hoshana Rabbah, Friday, October 2, aravos are beaten at daybreak. Tefillas Geshem is recited on Shemini Atzeres. Then come the hakafos — and after Yom Tov, many cities hold hakafos shniyos with live bands in public squares. Watch for these in Rishon LeTsiyyon and across the country.
Weather through the week is late-September warm and dry, with highs in the high 20s to low 30s Celsius. Evenings cool off, particularly in the Jerusalem hills. The first seasonal rain is possible around Hoshana Rabbah — worth having a layer on hand for the final days.
Eating, Sleeping and Getting There
Tishrei is the most in-demand Israeli travel window of the year. Hotels sell out and rates peak. El Al carries most North America traffic, with Delta and United pointing at September resumptions. Book months ahead.
