Start on Dame Street as the Procession Rolls Past
By early afternoon on 1 January, the pavements around Dublin Castle are thick with families in new scarves, paper cups of coffee steaming in the cold, and the sound of a marching band tuning up somewhere off Dame Street. This is the NYF Dublin "Ignite and Excite" Procession, which moves through Dublin's streets with music, marching bands and street performers. Position yourself anywhere along the route and you get the whole thing for nothing: drumlines, costumed performers, and a crowd in good humour after the night before. Arrive early enough to claim a spot near the Castle, because that is where the day's centre of gravity sits.
Free Concerts at Dublin Castle and Meeting House Square
The New Year's Day programme is built around a free family day and concert at Dublin Castle running from 1pm to 5pm, with live music and street performers on site. It is a genuinely open invitation: no ticket price, no dress code, just a courtyard full of people and a stage. If you want something more rooted in the tradition, walk over to Meeting House Square in Temple Bar, where traditional musicians play through the afternoon. Between the two venues you can shape a whole day on foot, moving between the Castle and Temple Bar as the mood takes you.
- Dublin Castle — free family day and concert, 1pm to 5pm, with live music and street performers
- Meeting House Square — traditional musicians, an easy walk from the Castle
- The "Ignite and Excite" Procession — music, marching bands and street performers moving through Dublin's streets
Fireworks Over the Water at Dún Laoghaire and Howth
South Dublin's coastline gets its own share of the festival. The NYF Dublin programme places fireworks in Dún Laoghaire and Howth, both reachable from the city by DART, and both worth the trip if you would rather watch the sky over water than over rooftops. Dún Laoghaire, with its harbour and long pier, is the natural southside choice; Howth sits on the northern side of the bay, so between the two you can pick your view of the coastline. These displays are tied to the festival's New Year's Eve programme, so plan your New Year's Day around the city events and treat the coastal fireworks as the night before's finale.
Traditional Music, the Music Trail and Where to Eat Between Sets
The festival runs across three days, from 30 December 2026 to 1 January 2027, and the Music Trail spreads live performances by up-and-coming Irish musicians across various Dublin city venues, spanning traditional, rock, indie and punk. That means the days either side of New Year's Day are not dead time — you can spend 30 December drifting between gigs, and save 1 January for the Castle and Meeting House Square. On New Year's Eve itself, the city centre and Dublin Castle host the main party, with acts including Biird and Inhaler, and a Countdown Concert at the Castle that builds to the "Midnight Moment". There is also a matinee Countdown Concert at the Castle earlier in the day, for anyone who wants the midnight feeling without staying up for it.
Between events, eat where the crowds are: the streets around Temple Bar and Dame Street fill with stalls and open kitchens on festival days, and the traditional music at Meeting House Square pairs naturally with a bowl of something hot before you head back out into the cold.
Getting Around and Planning Your Three Days
Everything above sits within a walkable core — Dublin Castle, Meeting House Square and the procession route all cluster around the city centre — with Dún Laoghaire and Howth a DART ride away for the fireworks. Transport for Ireland advises using the TFI Journey Planner or the TFI Live App to plan routes to the festivities, which is the sensible move when streets are closed for a procession and crowds are heavy. The whole festival is developed by Fáilte Ireland in association with the Office of Public Works, so the programme is published well in advance and the New Year's Day concerts remain free to attend.
Book your accommodation on the southside early, keep 1 January clear for the Castle, and let the procession, the free concerts and the walk to Meeting House Square fill your first day of 2027. Start with the TFI Journey Planner, then build the rest of the day around it.
