Stand on Bem Square as the Torches Come Down Fő Utca

Kossuth Square at Dawn, the Parliament by Afternoon
On Friday 23 October 2026 — the national holiday itself — the flag-raising and festive programme at Kossuth Square begins at 07:30, with the Parliament building as the backdrop. The commemoration ceremony follows at 11:00, including the speech by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. Later, from 15:00 to 20:00, the Parliament opens its doors free of charge: you can walk the Grand Staircase, see the Cupola Hall and the Holy Crown, with last entry at 17:00. Ride a 1950s Tram and Let a Paperboy Read You the News
Between 22 October and 4 November 2026, period trams from the 1950s run on lines 4, 6, 47 and 49, turning an ordinary trip across the city into a piece of the era. At the same stops, paperboys announce the news of the day as it would have been read in 1956. Catch them on 22–23 October and 28–29 October between 10:00 and 16:00; on 24–27 October, 30–31 October and 1–3 November between 15:00 and 18:00; and on 4 November from 10:00 to 16:00. The locations are Móricz Zsigmond körtér, Szent Gellért tér, Kálvin tér, Széna tér, Jászai Mari tér, Nyugati tér, Blaha Lujza tér and Corvin negyed — which is to say, most of the squares you will pass through anyway.
Candles on Andrássy út, Music on the Embankment, Beethoven at Müpa
The House of Terror Museum at Andrássy út 60 offers free entry from 10:00 to 18:00 on 23 October, with candle-lighting at the Wall of Heroes throughout the day and light painting projected on the facade from 16:00 to 23:00 — the projection also runs on the evening of 22 October. Down on the Pest embankment, the RAKPART farewell weekend takes over the Jane Haining riverside from 23 to 25 October: live music, workshops, pop-up art and games, mostly free and drop-in. Friday 23 October starts at 15:00; Saturday 24 October starts at 14:00 with a OneTwoFour concert at 18:30; Sunday 25 October starts at 16:00 with the Budaörs Wind Orchestra at 18:00 and a DJ set from 19:00 to 22:00. If you would rather sit in a hall, the 1956–2026 commemorative concert for the 70th anniversary is at Müpa Budapest on Saturday 24 October at 19:30, conducted by András Keller, with tenor István Kovácsházi, pianist János Balázs and the Cantemus Choir. The programme is built around Beethoven's Egmont Overture — the piece Hungarian Radio broadcast most often during the revolution — alongside László Dubrovay's 1956, Liszt's Hungarian Fantasia and Kodály's Psalmus Hungaricus.
Fill the Gaps Between Ceremonies: Baths, Lights and a Slow Sunday
