Count Down on Korzo, Where the Whole City Fits
By ten in the evening on 31 December, the Korzo is shoulder to shoulder. Rijeka's pedestrian spine runs between pale Austro-Hungarian facades hung with festive lighting, and on New Year's Eve a stage goes up along it for the city's central open-air celebration. The programme in recent years has run from roughly 22:00 to 02:00, with the countdown at midnight, and the city-organised reception on Korzo has been free for years — no ticket, no wristband, just show up. Arrive early if you want to be anywhere near the stage; the crowd thickens steadily after eleven.
One thing you will not see at midnight: fireworks on Korzo. Rijeka has repeatedly chosen biodegradable confetti and stage effects instead, so the turn of the year arrives in a blizzard of paper rather than a bang. If that surprises you, watch the faces around you — it is a deliberate civic choice, and the crowd plays along.
Start the Day on the Riva, Finish It in the Old Town
New Year's Eve in Rijeka is not a single night but a full day, and the Adamić Quay — the Riva along the harbour — carries the longest stretch of it. Live bands, DJs and food and drink stands run through the daytime of 31 December and continue into the night, so you can drift between the water and the Korzo stage without ever leaving the centre.
- Advent and winter locations at Adamić Quay, Trg Riječke rezolucije and Exportdrvo all run all-day programming on 31 December.
- Old Town clubs and bars — Klub Crkva, Palach, and the bars around Ante Starčevića — run their own parallel programmes once the outdoor stages wind down.
- Festive lighting stays up in the centre and several districts, often into early January, so the walk home is still lit.
Note that clubs, theatre concerts such as those at HNK Ivana pl. Zajca, and New Year's menus in hotels and restaurants are separate and paid — the free city programme covers the open-air stages and public Advent locations, not everything with a door.
Take the Children to Trsat at Noon
If midnight crowds are not the plan, Rijeka has built a genuine alternative. Family events at Trsat Castle and the Export Ice Box typically begin around 10:00 or 10:30, and the child-friendly countdown falls at 12:00 noon — staged with balloons and confetti rather than fireworks. At Trsat the midday reception comes with animation, mascots and balloon effects; in the evening the castle terrace turns into DJ and dance areas looking out over the harbour and the Kvarner. The Export Ice Box, in the Exportdrvo hall, runs its children's programme on the ice rink.
Trsat sits on the hill above the city, so the view is part of the outing. Build in time to get up there and back, especially on a night when the centre is closed to through traffic.
What to Wear, and How to Get There
Late December in Rijeka runs from around freezing to about 10 °C, with the Bora wind and drizzle both common. Much of the programme is outdoors, so dress for it: warm, windproof layers, sturdy shoes, and a rain jacket. This is not a city where you can duck between venues in a party outfit.
- By air: Rijeka Airport (RJK) is on Krk island; Zagreb, Trieste and Pula are the alternative airports, with bus or rental car onward.
- By road: the A6 and A7 motorways lead into the city.
- On the night: the centre and Korzo are often closed to through traffic on New Year's Eve — use the car parks, or come by bus or train.
- Where to sleep: hotels and apartments near Korzo, the harbour and Trsat book out quickly. Book early, and check post-midnight access if road closures apply.
Keep bags secure, agree a meeting point with your group before the crowds build, and arrive early for the Korzo countdown.

The exact programme for 2026/2027 is typically published by the City of Rijeka only in late autumn 2026 — stage times and street closures land shortly before 31 December. What you can count on without waiting for the lineup is the shape of the thing: a free open-air celebration on Korzo from late evening to around 02:00, a full day of music and stalls on the Riva, a noon countdown for families at Trsat and the Export Ice Box, and club programmes in the Old Town running in parallel.
Book a place to stay near the centre now, before the rooms around Korzo and the harbour disappear, and keep an eye on the city's pages as autumn turns. By the time the confetti falls on Korzo, the only decision left will be which stage to stand in front of.
