Start on Main Street, Where the Festival Takes Over the Square

On the first Saturday of December, Courthouse Square fills from ten in the morning. Vendor tents go up along West Main Street, the parade forms, and the shops around the square stay open while the crowd moves between them. This is the Louisa Christmas Festival & Parade, run by the Town of Louisa, and for five hours it turns the centre of town into a market, a procession and a gathering all at once. Each year carries its own theme — recent editions have been built around "A Charlie Brown Christmas" — so the decorations, the floats and the stalls all answer to the same idea.

You will not find a blockbuster attraction here. What you get instead is a small town that gives itself over to a single day: a square that becomes the stage, a market that becomes the social hub, and a morning that runs straight through to mid-afternoon. Plan your visit around that Saturday, because that is when Louisa does its best work.

Spend the Morning at the Vendor Market

The festival's vendor market is where you should spend at least part of the day doing nothing productive. This is where you buy the small things — gifts, crafts, seasonal goods — and where you eat standing up, with your hands, in the cold.

Watch the Parade, Then Walk the Square

The parade is the centrepiece of the day and it is free to take part in, whether you are watching from the pavement or marching. It moves through the downtown streets around Courthouse Square, and the whole festival is built so that you can watch it and still have time at the stalls afterwards.

Know the Rhythm of the Season

Timing matters more than any single event. The Louisa festival is a one-day affair, so build your trip around that Saturday rather than around a month of programming.

Bring a proper winter coat. This is a Virginia December, and you will be outdoors for the better part of the day, moving between the square and the surrounding streets.

Make It a Wider Holiday Trip

If you want more than a single day, the wider region keeps the season going. In Largo, Florida, the city runs a holiday programme from late November 2025 through January 2026, and it is worth knowing what is on if you are travelling further afield.

Note the closures if you are planning around them: Largo city facilities shut on Thu Nov 27, Fri Nov 28, Wed Dec 24, Thu Dec 25 and Thu Jan 1. Full event details are at LargoEvents.com, and the city's own hub is Largo.com/HollyJolly.

Start with the Town of Louisa's listing for the festival and parade, then pick your Saturday. Everything else — the market stalls, the parade route, the shops around the square — fills in around that one day.
