Log cabins on Fargate and the smell of mulled wine in the November dark

It is mid-November, the light has gone by half past four, and Fargate is lined with timber cabins. Steam curls off the German sausage grill, someone is ladling mulled wine and cider, and the queue at the Yorkshire pudding wrap stall stretches past the next cabin. Sheffield's Christmas market returns to the city centre from Thursday 12 November 2026, with more than 50 festive log cabins spread across Fargate, Pinstone Street and The Moor. Over 80% of the traders are local and independent businesses, so the gifts on the tables are largely Sheffield-made rather than shipped in. Alongside the food and drink — hot chocolate, churros, Alpine-themed bars — you will find seasonal gifts and live entertainment threaded through the streets.

Time your visit for the opening weekend, Saturday 14 to Sunday 15 November, when street entertainment, children's characters, craft activities, local bands and live performances fill the same three streets. The market itself runs until 24 December, so a December weekday evening gives you the cabins with room to walk between them.

An ice rink in Tudor Square and a snow slide on Surrey Street

For the first time in more than a decade, an artificial ice rink comes to the city centre — it sits in Tudor Square, between the theatres and the Peace Gardens. A snow slide runs on Surrey Street nearby. Neither requires booking a train; both are part of the same city-centre programme that begins on 12 November and runs through November, December and into January. If you want a second skating session, Winter Skating at Magna Science Adventure Centre runs from 19 December 2026 to 17 January 2027.

After dark, follow the illuminations. The council's programme lights Haymarket, Fargate, Barker's Pool, Surrey Street, Division Street, Pinstone Street, Peace Gardens and Cambridge Street, so a loop from the station down through the city centre and back via the Peace Gardens takes in most of them.

Carol singalongs, film scores played live and a wartime Christmas

The city's concert calendar is dense in December, and several events reward booking ahead:

For families, Stick Man, Freckle Productions' adaptation of the Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler book, runs from 5 December 2026 to 3 January 2027. At Sheffield Theatres, Singin' in the Rain is at the Crucible from 26 November 2026 to 16 January 2027, and the Cinderella pantomime at the Lyceum runs from 28 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, with Damian Williams in his 19th year.

Gas lamps at Kelham Island and pierogi at the Millennium Gallery

Two markets beyond the city centre are worth planning a day around. The Victorian Christmas Market at Kelham Island Museum takes over the gas-lamp-lit site on 5–6 December 2026 with more than 80 stalls of Sheffield-made wares and gifts, plus festive entertainment. A week earlier, on 29 November 2026, the Ukrainian Christmas Market fills the Millennium Gallery with traditional Ukrainian food, handmade gifts, live music and a Ukrainian choir, alongside free creative workshops and family activities.

For the season's official start, the Sheffield Christmas Celebration takes place on Devonshire Green on Sunday 15 November 2026 — a free but ticketed family show with a new festive lights spectacle, the first time Devonshire Green has featured in the opening weekend. It sold out, so watch for ticket announcements if you plan around it.

Plan around a weekday, and book the theatre early

Sheffield's Christmas runs from the 12 November switch-on deep into January, which means you can choose your moment: a November opening weekend for the street performances, a December weekday for the markets without the crush, or the days between Christmas and New Year for the pantomime and the concert hall. Book theatre and concert tickets as soon as your dates are fixed — the December calendar is stacked — and check the Visit Sheffield what's-on guide and the council's announcements closer to the season, since some programme details, including Devonshire Green tickets, are still to be confirmed.
