Start on Oxford Street as the lights come on
By mid-afternoon on 24 December, Oxford Street is at its most theatrical: the illuminations run the length of the street, the pavements are thick with last-minute shoppers, and the department store windows are lit for the evening. A guided Christmas lights walking tour is the most efficient way to see it — the route takes in the Oxford Street displays and finishes at the Trafalgar Square Christmas tree, and departures run across late November and much of December, including 20 December 2026. If you would rather walk it yourself, time your arrival for dusk, when the lights read strongest against a dark sky, and let the crowd carry you west toward Marble Arch.
Trade the crowds for a rink or a stage
Christmas Eve is a good day to spend indoors, and the city has two reliable options that run right through the holidays.
- Hyde Park Winter Wonderland (19 November 2026 – 3 January 2027) fills the park with an ice rink, fairground rides and stalls selling Christmas food and drink. Entry starts from £5.
- Hampton Court Palace Christmas Ice Rink (20 November 2026 – 3 January 2027) puts you on the ice in front of the Tudor palace, with a café on site. Skating starts from £18.
- Raymond Briggs' The Snowman at the Peacock Theatre runs 21 November 2026 – 3 January 2027, from £18 — the stage adaptation, and an easy booking for a family afternoon.
Carols by candlelight, and a film with a live orchestra
The Royal Albert Hall's Christmas carol concerts run from 4 to 24 December 2026, which makes Christmas Eve itself a live possibility — book early, as this is the final night of the run. Tickets start from £22. Earlier in the month the same hall screens Home Alone with a live score (6 December 2026, from £30), and The Holiday gets the same treatment on 29 November and 6 December 2026, with Hans Zimmer's score played live, from £45.
If you want something smaller and closer to the West End, Christmas by Candlelight at Bloomsbury Central Baptist Church, near Shaftesbury Avenue, includes a 24 December 2026 date among its December run (21 November; 11, 12, 19, 21, 22, 23, 24 and 26 December). Tickets from £20. Christmas Carols by Candlelight at St Mary-le-Strand Church runs 3 and 19 December 2026 from £25, and Candlelight Concert: Christmas Classics at Central Hall Westminster plays 12 and 18 December 2026 from £20.
Eat your way through the festive fayre
Christmas eating in London in late December splits neatly between the market stalls and the palace. At Hyde Park Winter Wonderland, food and drink stalls sit among the rides and fairground attractions, so you can graze between them on whatever the traders are cooking that week. At Hampton Court, the Christmas Festive Fayre takes over the palace on 4, 5, 6, 11, 12 and 13 December 2026, with food, drink and music on the bandstand. Both are daytime affairs, so if you are in London only for the 24th, plan your festive meal around the Winter Wonderland stalls or book somewhere in the West End before an evening concert.
Know the shape of the day
Christmas Eve in London is a half-day city. Shops and markets wind down through the afternoon, transport switches to a reduced service, and the evening belongs to churches, concert halls and the lit streets rather than to retail. Build your 24 December around three things: daylight for the markets and the ice rink, dusk for Oxford Street and the Trafalgar Square tree, and the evening for a carol concert — the Royal Albert Hall run ends that night, and Bloomsbury Central Baptist Church has a 24 December performance. Check individual venue times and last entry before you commit, since Christmas Eve hours are shorter than the rest of December.
Book the concert first — the Christmas Eve slots are the ones that go — then build the rest of the day around it: a morning skate, an afternoon at the stalls, and Oxford Street as the lights come on. Everything above runs annually, and the 2026 dates are already published, so there is no reason to leave it to the last minute.
