Christmas windows in the Marais, not the Riviera
You step off the Métro at Hôtel de Ville onto Rue de Rivoli, and there it is: a department store frontage glowing with a picture-book scene of a small fir tree in a snowy wood, crowds bunched along the pavement reading the windows chapter by chapter. This is the BHV Marais Christmas window display, and it is in Paris, not Nice. The reference material for this guide contains no Nice events, markets or parades, so plan your trip around the 4th arrondissement and the Right Bank instead.
Follow "The Little Fir" along Rue de Rivoli
The 2026 display is titled "The Little Fir" (Petit Sapin): a small Christmas tree searching a snowy forest for its lost lights, with each act of generosity reviving its glow. It unfolds in six chapters across the storefront windows at 52 Rue de Rivoli, opposite the Hôtel de Ville, in a picture-book style aimed at families. The windows are free to view from Tuesday, November 17, 2026, throughout the holiday season; the store has launched its season in mid-November with a façade show in past years.
- Read the windows from the sidewalk on Rue de Rivoli — no reservation needed, and the chapters run in order.
- Go on a weeknight if you can; December weekends are busiest.
- Check BHV's official site for extended December store hours.
- Walk on to the Tour Saint-Jacques and the Marais exhibitions afterwards.
Step inside for the Noël du Bazar
Inside the store, the "Noël du Bazar" programme fills the floors. The ground floor holds a Christmas gift shop, and the ground and third floors carry gourmet food zones and tableware; every floor has "BHV Bazaar" Christmas selections. The ground floor also hosts Belgian home brand Flamant, a Tour d'Argent fine-grocery corner and a La Fox Box photo booth. On the fifth floor, the immersive experience "Cleopatra, the Fate of Egypt" runs through the holiday season.
- Gift ideas with prices: a Kult Sapin candle at €28, City Bzz Paris honey at €14, La Cure Gourmande cookies, and La Niche pet plush toys from €3.99 in the basement.
- The store marks its 170th anniversary in 2026 — it began as Xavier Ruel's Bazar Napoléon at Rue de Rivoli and Rue des Archives.
Make a day of the other grands magasins
BHV is one of five Paris department stores with animated Christmas windows, alongside Galeries Lafayette, Printemps Haussmann, Le Bon Marché and La Samaritaine; the city's windows draw an estimated 10 million spectators a year. Le Bon Marché introduced the tradition in Paris in 1909.
- Galeries Lafayette Haussmann (40 Boulevard Haussmann, 9th): November 12 – December 31, 2026, windows by Jean-Charles de Castelbajac, with a suspended tree under the Art Nouveau dome and a sound-and-light show. Crowds are densest around noon and late afternoon; go in the morning or mid-afternoon.
- Printemps Haussmann (64 Boulevard Haussmann, 9th): from November 5 at 5pm to January 3, with a rooftop ice skating rink and city views.
- Le Bon Marché Rive Gauche (24 Rue de Sèvres, 7th): October 24 to December 31, with a mountain-resort theme in store, especially on the second floor.
- La Samaritaine (19 Rue de la Monnaie, 1st): from November 5 at 6pm to January 4, with an enchanted winter garden theme.
Evening in the Marais
Across Rue de Rivoli from BHV, a Christmas market sets up at the Hôtel de Ville. The Marais boutiques stay open nearby, and the jazz clubs on Rue des Lombards are a short walk away for a late set. The Métro Hôtel de Ville (lines 1 and 11) puts you back on the network when the windows go dark.
Book a weeknight in late November or early December, when the six chapters of "The Little Fir" are lit and the December weekend crush has not yet arrived, and build your evenings around the Marais and the grands magasins.
