Where the Season Starts: La Canebière and the Old Port
Stand at the top of La Canebière on a December evening and the city shows you its whole Christmas at once. Below you, the long avenue runs down toward the Vieux-Port, lined with wooden chalets whose windows throw out light, and the smell of mulled wine and chocolate drifts between the stalls. This is the heart of Christmas in Marseille: the market on La Canebière runs from 22 November to 4 January, open daily 10:30–20:00 and until 21:00 on Fridays and Saturdays, with free admission. Artisans and designers sell jewellery, sweets, decorations, fabrics and wooden toys, and there's entertainment through the day.
Walk down to the Quai du Port and you reach the Foire aux Santons, the santon fair, in its 223rd edition this season and running 15 November–4 January. It's free, open Sunday–Thursday 10:00–19:00 and Friday–Saturday 10:00–20:00, and the santon makers demonstrate the traditional craft on site. These clay figures are central to the Provençal crèche, so this is where you buy the pieces you'll actually keep. The fair's official opening is marked with a mass in Provençal at Église Saint-Cannat les Prêcheurs.
Skate, Slide and Let the Children Loose
On the Quai de la Fraternité, from 13 December to 4 January, the city sets up a toboggan run and an ice rink, open daily with equipment loaned on site — bring gloves. At Place Bargemon, the Children's Village runs 29 November to 4 January with face painting, workshops and Santa's chalet.
Two Saturdays turn the centre into a pedestrian zone, with no traffic 08:30–19:30. On 13 December, children's villages open at Place Castellane and the Opéra forecourt (10:00–19:00), and at 18:30 the Town Hall hosts "Aria," an aerial ballet set to Vivaldi's Four Seasons. On 20 December the same villages run again, light projections play on the Town Hall façade from 17:30 to 22:00, and at 19:00 the Gospel Philharmonic Experience — around forty singers — performs on the Quai de la Fraternité.
One Night of Fireworks Over the Old Port
If you plan around a single evening, make it 20 December. After the gospel concert, a drone show and fireworks launch from 20:00 around the Old Port. Follow the illuminated route that links the Old Port to Place Castellane — past the Tourist Office, the Opera, the Félix Baret fountain at the Préfecture and the Cantini fountain at Castellane. The Town Hall projections and the illuminated route continue on 21 December, 17:30–22:00, for a calmer second pass.
Earlier in the month, on 29 November at 17:30, Place Bargemon hosts the illumination launch with a mini-concert by Anaïs Delva, and a toy collection for Restos du Coeur runs 10:00–19:00. Expect traffic restrictions on Quai du Port between Rue Bonneterie and Rue Pentecontore that day.
Christmas Reaches the Neighbourhoods — and the Basilica
The city's Christmas spreads outward on Sunday afternoons, 10:00–17:00, with decoration workshops, face painting, puppet and magic shows, story readings, photo booths, Santa stands, food stalls, balloons, a DJ and a brass band. The programme moves around the arrondissements:
- 23 November: Saint-Henri (Place Raphel boulodrome, 16th), La Capelette (Jardin Guy Azaïs, 10th), Bon Secours (Place Léonard Dalmas, 14th)
- 30 November: Belle de Mai (Place Cadenat, 3rd), Saint-Marcel (Parc du CMA, 11th), Saint Antoine (Place Alphonse Canovas, 15th)
- 7 December: La Joliette (Place de la Joliette, 2nd), Saint-Just (Place de l'Église, 13th)
- 14 December: Bonneveine/Littoral Sud (Escale Borély, 8th), Les Chartreux (Place Edmond Audran, 4th)
On 7 December the restored Notre-Dame de la Garde is inaugurated: a 15:30 celebration at Saint-Victor Abbey, then a climb to the basilica, and at 18:00 a sound-and-light show illuminates "la Bonne Mère" above the city.
Eat the Cake, Then Plan Your Days
Provençal Christmas has its own table, and the city gives you a way in. On 6 December at 14:30, in front of the Tourist Office, the bakers' association holds a solidarity sale of pompe à l'huile — the traditional Christmas cake — at €2 a share, benefiting a children's charity. Buy a slice, then look for the same cake, and the sweets and mulled wine of the chalets, along La Canebière and at the Quai du Port fair.
Build your visit around the dates that matter to you: the neighbourhood Sundays through December, the pedestrian Saturdays of 13 and 20 December, and the fireworks over the Old Port on the 20th. Book your stay for the run-up to Christmas, keep an evening free for the illuminated route, and let the city's calendar set your pace.
