Fourvière Glows, Bellecour Spins: The City After Dark
By the last week of December, the hill above Vieux Lyon is the brightest thing in the city. From December 26 to 31, an 18-minute sound and light show washes the façade of the Basilique de Fourvière (8 Place de Fourvière, Lyon 5e), running 6:45–9:45 PM each evening and free to watch. Come up early, take a spot on the esplanade, and let the projection do the work while the rooftops of the Presqu'île glitter below you.
- Palais de la Bourse (2 Place de la Bourse, Lyon 2e): the immersive "Flow" sound-and-light show runs 30 minutes, with time slots between 5:30 and 9:30 PM. Tickets start at €7 and booking is recommended.
- Place Bellecour (Lyon 2e): the Ferris wheel turns until 10:00 PM — €9 for adults, €6 for children — and gives you the whole lit-up city in one slow rotation.
Where the Crowd Counts Down: Clubs, Concerts and Comedy
Lyon treats December 31 as a night with two halves: an early, seated one and a late, loud one. Book the first, then decide whether you have a second in you.
- Comédie Odéon (6 Rue Grolée, Lyon 2e) runs four shows from 3:00 PM, including 'Mon Pote' for young audiences, 'Dernier réveillon avant l'année prochaine' at 5:00 PM, 'La Machine de Turing' at 7:30 PM and 'Le Père Noël est une ordure !' at 10:00 PM. Show-only tickets start at €11.50; a dinner-and-show package is €120 and comes with a DJ set.
- 'Le Grand Soir de l'Année' at the Bourse du Travail (205 Place Guichard, Lyon 7e): a comedy night hosted by Tristan Lucas with Antek, Lise Dehurtevent, Rémi Boyes, Cécile Marx and Umut Köker, from 8:00 PM, tickets from €37.50.
- Théâtre des Célestins (4 Rue Charles-Dullin, 69002 Lyon): 'KA-IN' by Groupe Acrobatique de Tanger — thirteen acrobats, seventy minutes, 8:00–9:10 PM, suited to ages 7–8 and up.
- Espace Gerson (Salle Edouard Herriot / Palais de la Mutualité, 1 Place Antonin-Jutard, 69003 Lyon): Mickaël Bièche performs 'Classe moyenne' from 6:00 PM; €35 full price, €32 reduced.
- After midnight, the city splits into its club nights: an Opéra Techno Night from 10:30 PM to 4:30 AM (€40), Euronight at La Rayonne from 10:30 PM to 5:00 AM (€28–38), Le Sucre from 10:30 PM to 5:00 AM (€35), Petit Salon from 12:30 to 6:30 AM (€10–19.99), and the Amour Festival, which stretches from December 31 into January 2 with 10:00 PM–5:30 AM sessions and two-day passes from €36.69 to €69.99.
A Table for the Last Night of the Year
Lyon's réveillon is a restaurant occasion before it is anything else, and the classic houses lean into it. The Paul Bocuse Brasseries — Le Nord (Lyon 2e), l'Est (Lyon 6e), l'Ouest (Lyon 9e) and le Sud (Lyon 2e) — serve a New Year's Eve menu at €115 built around foie gras, scallops and veal. Cintra (43 Rue de la Bourse, Lyon 2e) offers its own at €110, with foie gras, lobster risotto and soufflé. Brasserie Georges (30 Cours de Verdun Perrache, Lyon 2e) keeps it festive and à la carte, with prices varying by what you order.
For the ingredients themselves, go to Les Halles Paul Bocuse (102 Cours Lafayette, 69003 Lyon). Vendor hours vary around the holiday, so shop earlier in the day rather than late. While you are there: Mère Richard for Saint-Marcellin, Sève for pastry, Gast for rosette.
Family Hours, Escape Rooms and Board Games
Not every celebration needs to run until dawn, and Lyon makes room for the earlier kind. Lyon Escape Game keeps three rooms open on December 31 — 'Mentalist: The Hour of Truth', 'The Dungeon' and 'The Devil's House' — with slots from 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM, from €18 per person, booking essential. Enigmatic Live Escape Game runs customizable scenarios in slots from 10:45 AM to 6:00 PM, from €25 per person.
- Yakapiocher (8 Rue Rivet, Lyon 1er): a family celebration from 4:00 PM for children, or 7:00 PM–3:00 AM for adults; €48 adults, €28 children.
- Tire-toi une Bûche (51 Rue Saint-Michel, 69007 Lyon): DJ set, game tournaments, collective challenges and a buffet, 6:00 PM–3:00 AM, €30, reserved through the bar's website.
- Cirque Imagine (5 Avenue des Canuts, Vaulx-en-Velin): a family circus evening with a dinner-show, aerial acts and a DJ until morning, 7:00 PM–4:00 AM; €185 for adults, €95 for children. The cabaret-circus evening is sold out, so the dinner-show is the one to book.
Planning the Night Around the Clock
Think of December 31 in Lyon as three shifts. Late afternoon belongs to the lights: Fourvière from 6:45 PM, the Palais de la Bourse slots, one last spin on the Bellecour wheel before it stops at 10:00 PM. Early evening belongs to the table and the stage, whether that is a brasserie menu or a 5:00 or 7:30 PM curtain. After midnight, the clubs take over. Book the dinner, the show and the club in advance — several of these events sell out, and the circus cabaret already has — then build the rest of your day around the Halles, an escape room, or simply walking the lit streets between one appointment and the next.
