Walk Into the Lights on the Champs-Elysées
It is Christmas Eve, and you are standing at Place de la Concorde looking west. Ahead of you, hundreds of illuminated trees line the avenue all the way to the Arc de Triomphe, and the traffic has thinned to almost nothing. This is the spine of Christmas in Paris, and from late November through early January the city strings itself with light: the luxury shopfronts of Avenue Montaigne, the illuminated trees and column of Place Vendôme, the façades of Faubourg Saint-Honoré, the lanes of Montmartre, and Bercy Village. The displays change each season, so what you see is this year's version, not a postcard you already know. Walk it slowly, then loop back through the side streets where the crowds thin and the windows keep glowing.
Browse the Christmas Markets, Then Eat Your Way Through One
Paris runs Christmas markets from late November through December, and on Christmas Eve several are still in full swing. The largest is at La Défense, with dozens of stalls; smaller ones cluster near Notre-Dame at Square René Viviani, in Saint-Germain-des-Prés, and at Gare de l'Est. Expect ornaments, gifts, regional foods, hot chocolate and vin chaud as you wander.
- Square René Viviani, near Notre-Dame: artisans selling ceramics, jewelry, textiles and French-made gifts.
- Gare de l'Est: an Alsatian-themed market — gingerbread, kougelhopf, Munster cheese, charcuterie and Alsatian wines.
- La Défense: the biggest concentration of stalls, if you want the full circuit in one stop.
Make a meal of it rather than a snack: the Alsatian stalls at Gare de l'Est are effectively a standing dinner, and a cup of vin chaud is the correct way to keep your hands warm between stalls.
Take In a Christmas Concert in a Historic Church
Throughout December, Paris fills its churches with orchestras, choirs, soloists and organ performances, and Christmas Eve is one of the peak nights of the season. Sainte-Chapelle stages evening concerts beneath its stained-glass windows — the setting does as much work as the music. La Madeleine and Saint-Eustache host orchestras, choirs, soloists and organ performances as well. The repertoire leans on Vivaldi, Mozart, Bach and Handel alongside Christmas carols and traditional music, and extra holiday performances are scheduled on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Concerts continue through the final week of December into New Year's Eve, so if the 24th itself is full, the days around it are not.
See the Grands Magasins Windows and the Tree Under the Dome
The department store windows are unveiled each November and run through December, and Christmas Eve is one of the best nights to see them — the crowds are festive rather than frantic, and the streets around them are lit. Galeries Lafayette and Printemps face each other on Boulevard Haussmann; inside Galeries Lafayette, a large Christmas tree rises under the glass dome. Le Bon Marché, Samaritaine and BHV Marais mount their own displays. Each store builds a new theme every year, which is why Parisians still go look at windows they have seen their whole lives.
Plan Around the Season's Fixed Dates
Christmas Eve sits inside a run of events that extends past it, and knowing the shape of the season helps you decide how to spend the 24th.
- Salon du Cheval de Paris: December 4–6, 2026, at Paris Expo Porte de Versailles in the 15th arrondissement — three days of show jumping, dressage, western riding, vaulting, demonstrations and equestrian performances, including the evening spectacle "La Nuit du Cheval" with horsemanship, choreography, costumes, music and theatrical lighting.
- Festival du Merveilleux: December 26, 2026 – January 3, 2027, nine days at the Musée des Arts Forains in the Pavillons de Bercy, 12th arrondissement. The museum occupies former wine warehouses and holds 19th- and early-20th-century fairground attractions, mechanical music machines and theatrical sets; magicians, musicians, acrobats and dancers perform short pieces throughout the day, with decorated rooms, gardens and courtyards open.
- New Year's Eve: December 31, 2026, across the city — crowds gather on the Champs-Elysées for the midnight countdown near the Arc de Triomphe, and there are Seine dinner cruises with multi-course dinners and champagne at midnight, cabaret special performances, and December 31 restaurant menus.
Two other options work well on or around Christmas Eve: a Seine dinner cruise past the illuminated Notre-Dame, Louvre and Eiffel Tower, and guided tours of Versailles and the Louvre, food and wine experiences, or day trips beyond Paris if you want the city at a distance for an afternoon.
Choose Your Neighbourhood and Book Early
For Christmas Eve itself, the geography sorts itself: the 8th arrondissement for the Champs-Elysées lights, Avenue Montaigne, Place Vendôme and Faubourg Saint-Honoré, with the grands magasins on Boulevard Haussmann a short walk north; the 5th and 6th for the Square René Viviani market near Notre-Dame and the Saint-Germain-des-Prés market, with Sainte-Chapelle close by for an evening concert; the 10th for the Alsatian market at Gare de l'Est; and the 12th if you are staying on for the Festival du Merveilleux after Christmas. Christmas Eve concerts and dinner cruises are the two things most likely to fill, so book those first, then build your evening around whichever market and light display is nearest your table. Start with the concert or the cruise, pick your market, and let the walk between them be the evening.
