Walk Into the Liturgy on the Night of 6 January
Coptic Christmas falls on Thursday, 7 January 2027, with Christmas Eve on Wednesday, 6 January. The principal Nativity liturgy, led by Pope Tawadros II, begins on the evening of 6 January and can run into the early hours of the following morning. This is the centre of the celebration: a 43-day Nativity Fast — described in practical terms as avoiding animal products for much of the period — gives way to the Feast of the Nativity, celebrated on 29 Kiahk in the Coptic calendar.
Be realistic about access. Tourist attendance at liturgies is possible but not guaranteed. Entry depends on the individual church, the scale of the service, security arrangements, capacity, local instructions, and whether the service is intended primarily for the congregation. Large national services can involve invitations, security controls and restricted entry. The Nativity of Christ Cathedral in Egypt's New Administrative Capital has hosted major national Christmas liturgies led by Pope Tawadros II, including in January 2026, but the venue, public access and visitor policy for January 2027 are not guaranteed. The exact cathedral, access arrangements and timetable for 2027 will be confirmed when the Church publishes its programme — check close to the date, and treat any confirmed service you can attend as a privilege rather than a fixture.
If you do go, dress modestly with shoulders and knees covered, follow security and church-staff instructions, keep your voice low during worship, and don't block entrances, aisles or worshippers. Ask before photographing people, avoid flash, don't photograph services where prohibited, and give worshippers their personal space.
Spend the Daylight Hours in Coptic Cairo
The heart of the city's Christian heritage is Coptic Cairo, in Old Cairo, and it is easy to reach: get off at Mar Girgis station on Cairo Metro Line 1. The best time for ordinary sightseeing is morning to early afternoon, before the day's services and security procedures begin to reshape access. Around 6–7 January, expect access patterns to change because of security procedures, church services and visitor flows — and don't assume normal church sightseeing access during services.

Eat and Drink the Way the Feast Day Does
The holiday has a sequence: fasting, then liturgy, then family meal and visits. After the Christmas liturgy, families return to richer foods that were restricted during the Nativity Fast, and Egypt's State Information Service notes traditional Christmas sweets and breads associated with the season. Family meals differ, and no single menu is universal — so the honest pleasure here is in the shift itself, from the long abstention to the table that ends it.
Plan your logistics around the fact that Coptic Christmas Day is an official public holiday. Egypt's State Information Service records that 7 January became an official holiday in 2002, and Egypt's official 2026 holiday calendar listed 7 January as Coptic Christmas Day, declared a paid holiday across major public-sector bodies. On the day itself, hotels, airports, many restaurants and major tourist services generally continue operating, but individual museums, archaeological sites, churches, banks, offices and transport services may adjust their schedules. Reconfirm museum and archaeological-site hours, pre-arrange private transfers if timing is critical, and don't schedule bank or government-office tasks for the holiday. Final government announcements and operating schedules for 2027 should be checked close to the date.
Dress for a Cairo January
January is one of Cairo's coolest months: mild enough for daytime sightseeing, much cooler in the evenings. Wear layers during the day and bring a jacket for the evening of 6 January, when you may be standing outside before or after a service. This is the practical difference between a comfortable night and a cold one.

Coptic Christmas sits at the end of a run of winter dates that make a longer trip worthwhile. On 25 December 2026 you'll find Western-style Christmas atmosphere in selected hotels, resorts and tourism businesses. On 31 December 2026, New Year's Eve is marked in Cairo, on the Nile or at the Red Sea. Then 1 January 2027 is New Year's Day, and 6–7 January 2027 brings Coptic Christmas Eve and Day.

- Day 2 (6 January 2027): a morning visit to Coptic Cairo's heritage, the Coptic Museum and the historic churches, back to your hotel before the major evening services — attend a service only if access is confirmed
- Day 3 (7 January 2027): a flexible Christmas Day, with light sightseeing, Islamic Cairo or time along the Nile, depending on confirmed holiday opening hours
