Arriving on Roncalliplatz as the First Advent Lights Come On

You step out of Köln Hauptbahnhof and the cathedral is already there, filling the top of your vision, and at its feet the square is thick with people moving slowly between wooden stalls. It is the First Advent Sunday of 2026 — 29 November — and the market on Roncalliplatz has been running since 16 November, so the season is in full swing. Above you, a giant fir tree carries 50,000 lights. Around you: more than 140 decorated stalls, the smell of Reibekuchen frying in oil, Lebkuchen and Spekulatius stacked in neat rows, and mulled wine steam rising into the cold. Somewhere on the central stage a choir is singing. This is the market that calls itself the "Market of Hearts," and on Advent Sunday it is the centre of the city.

Walk the Four Central Markets in One Afternoon

Cologne keeps eight large Christmas markets, all free to enter, and the four main ones sit close enough to string together on foot. Start at the cathedral and work west and south.

If you want to add a fifth, the Hafen-Weihnachtsmarkt at Am Schokoladenmuseum 1A runs 13 Nov – 23 Dec 2026, daily 11:00–22:00 (opening at 18:00 on Totensonntag), with 70 white pagoda tents, a marine theme, fish specialities, sea shanties, pirate shows, a Ferris wheel and a 15-metre wooden three-mast boat serving mulled wine. The Stadtgarten market on Venloerstrasse is smaller and more local, with 80+ exhibitors changing weekly — its 2026 dates had not been released at the time of writing. And at Friesenplatz, the Heavenue Market runs 16 Nov – 23 Dec 2026 (Mon–Thu 14:00–22:00, Fri–Sat 12:00–23:00, Sun 12:00–22:00) as Cologne's only gay Christmas market, with drag performances and light shows.

Eat and Drink Your Way Through Advent

Rhenish specialities are the through-line: Reibekuchen, Lebkuchen, Spekulatius, Stollen, alongside international stalls and mulled wine in several variations. At the cathedral market, expect to pay roughly €4–€6 for mulled wine plus a deposit on the reusable cup — the cup design changes each year and is a souvenir in itself. The market has been ISO certified for sustainability since 2024, using reusable cups, energy-efficient lighting and socially responsible procurement. When you want to sit down indoors, Cologne's brewery culture is right there: Brauhaus Sion, around 700 years old, and Früh am Dom, the city's largest brewery, both run tours.

Time It Right: Quieter Hours and the Totensonntag Pause

Advent weekends are heavily crowded; weekday early afternoons are the calm alternative. One date needs planning around: Totensonntag, Sunday 22 November 2026, when the cathedral market, Markt der Engel and Nikolausdorf close, and the Hafen market opens only at 18:00. If you are travelling in by train, Köln Hauptbahnhof sits about a minute's walk from Roncalliplatz, with ICE, IC and regional services; parking garages are available at the main station, the theatre and Heumarkt, but public transport is the better call during Advent. A stamp card links several of the markets for day-trippers, and the Christmas Market Express stops near the cathedral and the Excelsior Hotel Ernst am Dom.

Beyond the First Advent: Ehrenfeld and the Season's Long Tail

Once you have walked the centre, push out to Ehrenfeld, one of the other major Cologne Advent markets and the one that sits apart from the Old Town cluster. And note the calendar's tail: while most markets close on 23 December, the Heumarkt side of Heinzels Wintermärchen runs to 10 January 2027, and from 26 December to 3 January the harbour market becomes a New Year market in front of the Ferris wheel. First Advent Sunday is the beginning of a season you can stretch well past Christmas.

Book your train into Köln Hauptbahnhof, step onto Roncalliplatz while the tree is still lit, and let the first cup of mulled wine set the tone for the four weeks ahead.
