Stalls, Glühwein and 50,000 Lights at the Cathedral

You step off the train at Köln Hauptbahnhof and the Dom is already there, black and enormous, and at its feet the wooden stalls of the Cathedral Christmas Market (Weihnachtsmarkt am Dom) wrap around Roncalliplatz in a ring of warm light. A fir tree stands in the middle strung with 50,000 lights, and somewhere on the central stage a choir or a brass band is finishing a set — the market programmes more than 100 evening performances and live music across its run. This is the market to start with, because it is the one you cannot miss even if you try. It runs 16 November to 23 December 2026, Sunday to Wednesday 11:00–21:00 and Thursday to Saturday 11:00–22:00, closed on Totensonntag, 22 November. Roughly 150 stalls surround the tree. Address: Roncalliplatz 1, 50667 Köln.

Walk the Old Town: Angels, Gnomes and an Ice Rink

From the Dom you can walk the whole centre. Head for Neumarkt and the Angels' Christmas Market (Markt der Engel), the city's oldest, where the stalls are white and the decorations are illuminated stars — 16 November to 23 December 2026, Sunday to Thursday 11:00–21:00, Friday to Saturday 11:00–22:00, closed 22 November. Then continue to Alter Markt for Heinzels Wintermärchen, running 23 November to 23 December 2026 daily 11:00–22:00, where the emphasis is handmade goods, decorations and souvenirs. It connects to the Heumarkt section through "Antique Alley", a lane of antiques, jewellery and books — and Heumarkt itself is the largest of the city's markets, open 23 November 2026 to 10 January 2027 daily 11:00–22:00 but closed on 24 and 25 December. This is where you skate: a 2,400 m² open ice rink more than 100 metres long, plus curling. The theme is the Heinzelmännchen, the Cologne house gnomes, and the food leans hearty — look for Flammlachs and Handbrot mit Käse.

Santa at the Medieval Gate, Pirates on the Rhine

At Rudolfplatz, Nicholas' Village (Nikolausdorf) sets its family-oriented stalls against the medieval Hahnentorburg, and Santa appears daily between 16:00 and 16:30 — 16 November to 23 December 2026, Sunday to Thursday 11:00–21:00, Friday to Saturday 11:00–22:00, closed 22 November. Then go south to the river for something entirely different: the Harbour Christmas Market (Hafen-Weihnachtsmarkt) on the Rhine bank at Am Schokoladenmuseum 1A, 50678 Köln, running 13 November to 23 December 2026 daily 11:00–22:00 (on Totensonntag, 22 November, it opens at 18:00 instead). Around 70 white pagoda tents carry a marine theme, with fish specialities, sea shanties and pirate shows, a Ferris wheel, and a 15-metre wooden three-mast boat serving mulled wine. From 26 December to 3 January it becomes a New Year market in front of the Ferris wheel.

Two Markets for a Quieter Half-Day

If the crowds at the big squares wear you down — and weekends here are extremely crowded, so aim for a weekday — there are two smaller options. Heavenue at Friesenplatz, 50672 Köln, is Cologne's only gay Christmas market, with pink stalls, drag performances and light shows, running 16 November to 23 December 2026, Monday to Thursday 14:00–22:00, Friday to Saturday 12:00–23:00 and Sunday 12:00–22:00. Farther out, and not walkable from the Old Town, the Stadtgarten Christmas Market at Venloerstrasse 40, 50672 Köln has a small, local feel with more than 80 exhibitors changing weekly; its 2026 dates had not been released at the time of writing, but in 2025 it ran 14 November to 23 December, Monday to Friday 16:00–21:30 and Saturday to Sunday 12:00–21:30, so check before you build a day around it. For something indoors and unfailingly Cologne, book a Kölsch brewery tour — Brauhaus Sion and Früh am Dom are the names to know.

Getting There and What to Know Before You Go

Christmas Eve itself falls after most of these markets have closed for the season, so plan your half-day in the weeks before — pick a weekday in late November or early December, start at the Dom while the lights are still competing with daylight, work your way through Neumarkt and the Old Town to Heumarkt, and finish on the Rhine with fish and a pirate song. Check the 2026 dates against the Stadtgarten listing before you commit, and then book the train.
