Stand in the Glow of Rathausmarkt on the Last Advent Saturday

It is mid-afternoon on 20 December 2026, and the square in front of Hamburg's neo-Gothic City Hall is packed shoulder to shoulder. A brass quartet is playing Christmas melodies, the air smells of roasted almonds and Glühwein, and somewhere above the crowd a man in a red suit is about to fly. This is the Rathausmarkt Christmas market, curated by Bernhard Paul's Circus Roncalli since 2002, and it is the centrepiece of the city's Advent season.

The market runs daily from 23 November to 23 December 2026, 11:00–21:00, with free admission. Around 80 stalls fill the square, selling artisan toys, handmade nativity scenes, Christmas decorations and regional Hamburg specialties — no mass-produced goods. A historic carousel sits at the centre. Classical brass plays daily except Saturdays.

Watch Santa Fly, Then Follow the Parade Down Mönckebergstraße

The market's signature spectacle is the Flying Santa Claus: daily at 16:00, 18:00 and 20:00, Santa travels by cable system between the City Hall and the building opposite, sleigh and reindeer in tow, accompanied by live music. On the four Advent Saturdays — 29 November, 6 December, 13 December and 20 December 2026 — a Christmas parade sets off at 14:00 and 17:00 along Mönckebergstraße to Rathausmarkt, with angels, elves, festive figures, live music and horse-drawn carriages. The Fourth Advent Sunday falls on 20 December 2026, the final Saturday of the parade run, so time your visit to catch the 14:00 or 17:00 procession and stay for the 16:00 or 18:00 flight.

Eat and Drink Your Way Through the Stalls

Both cash and card are accepted. The market runs on 100% green electricity with LED lighting, uses no single-use plastic, and composts its Christmas trees after closing.

Get There and Wander the Wider Market Cluster

Take the U-Bahn U3 to "Rathaus," which puts you directly at the square, or the U-/S-Bahn to "Jungfernstieg," about a three-minute walk away. Driving is impractical; the market is largely accessible and family-friendly. Rathausmarkt is part of a wider cluster of markets along Mönckebergstraße, Jungfernstieg and Spitalerstraße, so you can drift from one to the next on foot. If you want something different in tone, the alternative Wintergarten St. Pauli market is among Hamburg's other best-known Advent destinations.

Plan Around the Fourth Advent

Fourth Advent Sunday in 2026 lands on 20 December — the last of the four Advent Saturdays and the final day of the parade schedule. Arrive before 14:00 to claim a spot along Mönckebergstraße, follow the parade into Rathausmarkt, and stay through the evening for the 18:00 or 20:00 Flying Santa. The market closes for the season on 23 December, so the days around Fourth Advent are your last chance to see it at full pitch.
