Start on Ludwigstrasse as the City Turns Over
By seven in the evening on 31 December, Ludwigstrasse fills from the Siegestor toward Odeonsplatz — roughly 800 metres of open-air celebration known as the Silvestermeile, or New Year's Eve Mile. Four stages run the length of it: pop and party at the Siegestor, singer-songwriters at Geschwister-Scholl-Platz, hip-hop at Professor-Huber-Platz curated by the CRUX collective, and electro DJs near Ludwigkirche. Between them you'll find light and laser shows, video projections onto building facades, interactive art installations, street food trucks and drinks, and a family area. The 2025 edition ran from 7 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. and was ticketed through the Fever app, with entry from age six and under-18s accompanied by a parent or guardian. Arrive by U-Bahn — Giselastraße or Odeonsplatz are the nearest stations — and leave the large bags at home: bags are capped at A4 size, and fireworks, glass, cans and outside food and drink are all turned away at the entrance.
Where Munich Eats Its Last Meal of the Year
New Year's Eve dining in Munich is a reservation game, and most places want booking from early December. Choose your register:
- Beer hall with music: Augustiner-Keller serves a three-course meal with live music in the ballroom, a DJ and à la carte in the storage cellar, and a multi-course meal with sparkling wine in the Bürgerstube.
- Garden views: Seehaus in the Englischer Garten offers exclusive menus, a Bavarian Stüberl fondue, gala menus small and large across restaurant and pavilion, and a vegan option.
- Rooftop and hotel dining: Andaz Hotel in Schwabing runs two menus — The Lonely Broccoli on the ground floor and M'Uniqo Rooftop Bar on the 13th floor with city views. Frau im Mond, on the roof of the Deutsches Museum, parties from 7 p.m. on 31 December into 1 January with a classic or vegetarian menu.
- Long-form menus: Gasthaus Waltz puts on an eight-course gourmet menu; Fitzroy serves six courses; Restaurant Huber in Bogenhausen, Löwenbräukeller at Stiglmaierplatz, and the Bayerischer Hof restaurants (Atelier, Garden Restaurant, Trader Vic's) are further options.
- Dinner and a show: GOP Varieté Theater opens its New Year's Eve gala at 6:30 p.m. with a champagne reception, then a four-course meal interspersed with performances from the winter show "CIRCUS," followed by a snack buffet and after-show party after midnight. An afternoon matinee also runs.
Concerts, Cabaret and a Glenn Miller Matinee
The Residenz complex alone could occupy your whole afternoon and evening. At the Cuvilliés-Theater you can catch "Opera Brass" at 11 a.m., or Humperdinck's Hansel and Gretel at either 3–5:30 p.m. or 7:30–10 p.m. The Court Chapel of the Residenz holds two New Year's Eve concerts, 5–6 p.m. and 7–8 p.m.; the Hercules Hall runs an afternoon concert and an evening Festive New Year's Eve Gala; the Max-Joseph-Saal has an 11 a.m. matinee plus "New Year's Eve Master Concert I" at 4:30–6:30 p.m. and "Master Concert II" at 8–10 p.m.; and the Allerheiligen-Hofkirche hosts a festive concert at 5 p.m.
Elsewhere, the Isarphilharmonie — the Gasteig's temporary venue at HP8 — hosts the Munich Philharmonic's New Year's Eve concert on 31 December 2026 at 5 p.m., performing Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. The Bergson Kunstkraftwerk has the Bergson Jazz Orchestra playing "The Music of Glenn Miller" at 1:30, 3:30 and 5:30 p.m. in the Elektra Tonquartier, and the University of Music and Performing Arts presents Quadro Nuevo at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. If you'd rather laugh: Django Asül delivers his satirical year-in-review at the Lustspielhaus at 2 p.m., with an evening event to follow; the Galli Theater in the Amalienpassage stages "Der Beziehungscoach"; Pasinger Fabrik's Viel Lärm um Nichts performs "EIN HEISSES HERZ" from 6 p.m. to about 8:30 p.m.; the Prinzregententheater has "Breakin' Circus"; and the Deutsches Theater shows "Falco meets Amadeus" at 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
Fireworks: Where to Watch, Where to Light Them
Munich has no single central organised public fireworks display. From midnight, residents launch their own across the city — which means the show is everywhere, and the best thing you can do is pick your vantage point early. The Friedensengel, the bridges over the Isar, and the Hackerbrücke are popular for watching (though setting off your own fireworks from the Hackerbrücke is not permitted). Olympiaberg, the English Garden meadows and elevated spots near Marienplatz are cited as strong viewpoints.
Know the rules before you buy anything. Fireworks and firecrackers are banned in the city centre from Stachus to Marienplatz and at Viktualienmarkt for the 2026/2027 turn of the year. They are also prohibited in the English Garden on fire-safety and nature-conservation grounds, in Nymphenburg Palace Park, and in the Residenz courtyards. If you want to set off your own, head outside the Mittlerer Ring — Olympiaberg is the example given. For an organised display, the Tollwood Winter Festival on Theresienwiese puts one on as part of its long-running New Year's Eve party with live music and DJs. Theresienwiese also draws a large informal gathering.
Run It Off, Then Sleep In
The München RoadRunners Club e.V. holds its New Year's Eve Run on 31 December — the 41st edition — with routes through the Olympiapark at 500 m for children, plus 2 km, 5 km and 10 km. It's a clean way to bookend the year before the evening begins. If you're travelling with children, the daytime programme is deeper than you'd expect: the Munich Marionette Theater performs "Teddy's Big Christmas Adventure" at 2 p.m. (ending around 3:30 p.m.) and an "Old Munich Evening" at 7 p.m. (around 9:15 p.m.); the Munich Theater for Children stages "Oh, How Beautiful Is Panama" at 10 a.m.; and Bergson Kunstkraftwerk hosts a family concert, "Der bunte Knall," with percussionist Samuel Wootton at 11 a.m., running one hour.
Parties run late into the night at Bergson Kunstkraftwerk (9 p.m.–2 a.m. in the atrium, with DJs, live saxophone, percussion and trombone, music from the 1980s to the 2000s, and a midnight countdown), with exclusive options cited at P1 and Pacha Club, and past venues including Filmcasino, Milchbar and Neuraum. Then note the morning after: 1 January is a public holiday, and most attractions and transport run on Sunday schedules.
