Come Down to Masaryk Square and Let the Glühwein Find You
It is late afternoon on 25 December, and the light has already gone. Above Masaryk Square the Ferris wheel turns slowly against a dark sky, its cabins lit, and below it the stalls glow in rows. Somewhere in the crowd a child is holding a punch cup with both hands, and the smell that reaches you first is sweet — hot punch, gingerbread, sugar — cut by the cold air coming off the streets. The market runs from 22 November 2026 to 6 January 2027, and Christmas Day falls squarely inside it. The stalls open daily from 10:00 to 20:00, so you can arrive in the afternoon and stay until the shutters come down.
Make a Loop of Ostrava's Four Christmas Squares
The markets are spread across four squares, each with its own character, and walking between them is the best way to spend the day. Start at Masaryk Square, where the main cultural programme takes place and the Ferris wheel gives you a view over the whole scene. Then move on:
- Jirásek Square — a wooden nativity scene and a children's carousel; this is the square set aside as the children's stage.
- Prokeš Square, in front of the New Town Hall — a stage for performances.
- Dr. Edvard Beneš Square — a Christmas ice-skating rink. Bring gloves; the rink is outdoors.
Between them you'll pass stalls selling sweets, punch and gifts, with children's activities running alongside. Give the loop a couple of hours and let it take you into the evening, when the lights do the most work.
Eat and Drink Your Way Around the Stalls
The market food here is the point of the day: sweets, punch and gifts from the stalls, eaten standing up in the cold with the crowd moving around you. Because the stalls run from 10:00 to 20:00 daily, you can graze through the afternoon rather than sitting down to one meal — a cup of punch at Masaryk Square, something sweet at Jirásek Square while you watch the carousel, then back out into the cold. Keep the children in mind: the programme includes activities for them, and the carousel and nativity scene at Jirásek Square are built for exactly that audience.
Skate, Ride, and Warm Up Between the Squares
Two things make Ostrava's Christmas Day more than a market walk. The first is the ice rink at Dr. Edvard Beneš Square — a proper outdoor rink in the middle of the city, open through the season. The second is the Ferris wheel at Masaryk Square: ride it after dark, when the square below is at its busiest, and you get the whole market laid out under you. In between, use the stages. Masaryk Square carries the main cultural programme, and Prokeš Square has its own stage, so check what's running on the day and time your loop around it. The city's Christmas season runs through 6 January 2027, so if 25 December is too crowded for you, the same stalls and squares are there in the quieter days that follow.
Know Before You Go
Christmas Day in Ostrava is an outdoor day, so dress for standing around in the cold and plan to move between squares to stay warm. The market's fixed points are reliable: stalls daily 10:00–20:00, the Ferris wheel and main programme at Masaryk Square, the nativity and carousel at Jirásek Square, the stage at Prokeš Square, and the rink at Dr. Edvard Beneš Square. Check the official Xmas in Ostrava programme before you travel for the specific times of performances and children's activities on 25 December — the sources confirm the programme exists but not its exact schedule for the day.
Book your accommodation near the centre so the four squares are a walk apart, check the official Ostrava Christmas website for the day's programme, and give yourself the whole afternoon and evening of 25 December. The wheel will be turning, the punch will be hot, and the rink will be open.
