Mulled Wine Steam on náměstí Dr. E. Beneše
Step off the tram into the cold and the square opens up in front of you: roughly forty wooden stalls wrapped around náměstí Dr. E. Beneše, the town hall lit behind them, the air thick with the smoke of grilled sausages and the sweetness of hot punch. This is Liberec's Christmas market, and on Christmas Eve it is the centre of the city's life. The market runs daily from 10:00 to 19:00 through the Advent season, with a shorter final day — so plan your Christmas Eve visit around daytime hours rather than a late-night wander.
Come hungry and come slowly. The stalls sell mulled wine, homemade punch and hot chocolate to keep your hands warm, and trdelník, gingerbread, roasted chestnuts and handmade pralines to keep you walking. For something savoury, look for grilled sausages, potato pancakes and cheese specialities. Most of what you eat here you eat standing up, which is the point.
Ride the Advent Ferris Wheel, Then Take the Train
The market is not only stalls. A mechanical nativity scene by Fiala turns somewhere in the crowd, and an Advent observation wheel lifts you above the roofs for a view back down over the lights. A small Advent train runs between the squares, which is the easiest way to move a tired group from one end of the market to the other.
- Fiala's mechanical nativity scene — the market's traditional centrepiece
- Advent Ferris wheel — an observation wheel set up for the season
- Advent train — connects the market squares
- Children's attractions — craft workshops, a Christmas carousel and children's performances
If you are travelling with children, the craft workshops are where they will want to stay; the carousel is where they will want to stay twice.
Walk Over to Soukenné náměstí
The market spills beyond the main square. Additional stalls fill nearby Soukenné náměstí (Cloth Square), a short walk away, and the Advent train links the two. Treat the pair as one continuous market: start at náměstí Dr. E. Beneše, drift to Soukenné náměstí, and let the crowd carry you back.
Both squares sit in the city centre, so you can base yourself on foot. If you are driving, park at OC Forum Liberec or the Papírové náměstí car park. Public transport runs more frequently during Advent, which is the simpler option on a cold evening.
The Tree, the Concerts and the Season's Shape
The season opens with the tree lighting outside Liberec town hall — in the most recent confirmed edition, on a Sunday in late November. The fir is decorated with Moravian and Herrnhut stars and light chains, and the ceremony draws the city into the square for the first time that winter.
Concerts by local and well-known artists take place across the market period, so check what is programmed for the days around Christmas Eve once the season's schedule is published. If you want the fullest version of the market, come earlier in December; if you want Christmas Eve itself, come for the daytime hours and expect a quieter, shorter day.
Where to Sleep, and What Lies Beyond the Square
Central accommodation puts you within walking distance of everything above: Pytloun Grand Hotel Imperial, Clarion Grandhotel Zlatý Lev and Světoběžník Bed & Wine are all named as central options. Liberec sits in the Jizera Mountains, so if you have a spare day either side of Christmas Eve, the hills are the reason to give yourself one.
Start with the market dates for the coming season, book a room in the centre, and let the rest — the punch, the wheel, the train between the squares — happen on foot.
