Where the Old Year Meets the New: Freedom Square and Zelný trh
By late evening on 31 December, the compact historic centre of Brno becomes the stage. Public celebrations typically begin around 18:00, centred on Freedom Square (náměstí Svobody) and the Vegetable Market (Zelný trh), a short walk apart. On Freedom Square, recent years have brought live covers, radio DJs and an evening light show; on Zelný trh, an open-air winter cinema, a live band and food stalls. Both squares are free to enter and the public programme generally needs no ticket. The official Christmas markets run until 31 December, so the smell of hot food and mulled drink still hangs over the stalls as the evening begins. If you want a midnight moment without fireworks, look to the light and video-mapping shows projected onto central facades — the city's alternative to a pyrotechnic finale.
Hear in the New Year with the Brno Philharmonic
On 1 January 2027, the traditional New Year concerts take place, including the Brno Philharmonic's season at the Janáček Theatre, with events also at halls such as Besední dům. The orchestra has a particular claim on the date: it was established as the State Philharmonic Brno on 1 January 1956 and gave its first concert the same day, and it has held New Year concerts regularly since — every year except 2021, when the pandemic forced cancellation. In 2027 it marks its 71st birthday, and the New Year programme is dedicated to popular film music. The bill includes Nino Rota's "La strada" suite from the ballet, Joe Hisaishi's "Merry-Go-Round of Life" from the film Castle in the Sky, the Main Theme from John Williams's Star Wars, Erich Wolfgang Korngold's Cello Concerto in C major, Op. 37, and Leonard Bernstein's On the Waterfront suite. Lukáš Polák plays cello, with Filharmonie Brno conducted by Dennis Russell Davies. Tickets are sold separately or as part of the "Tailor-Made Season" package, online and in person.
Dance Past Midnight in Brno's Clubs
Brno's dense bar scene and large student population keep the city lively after midnight. Club doors usually open between 21:00 and 22:00, and one fixture already listed is "SILVESTR 2026 | NYE 2026" at Fléda Club (Štefánikova 24), running from 22:00 on 31 December 2026 into the early hours of 1 January 2027. Other venues in the mix include Sono Centrum and cabaret and theatre venues around the centre. Paid club nights and gala concerts run roughly €10–60, with club tickets at the lower end and dinner shows or prime concert seats at the higher end; buy through venue sites and regional ticket platforms. Night trams and night buses on the IDS JMK network run after midnight, so you can move between the squares and the clubs without cutting the evening short.
Fireworks, Weather and Getting Around
There has been no official city fireworks display since 2017, when the show was previously staged over Špilberk Castle. Private fireworks are permitted on 31 December and 1 January, except in exclusion zones around hospitals, senior homes, animal shelters and zoo areas — so expect scattered private bursts rather than a single civic display. Late December weather often sits around freezing, which makes layers, sturdy shoes and a hat sensible for time spent standing on open squares. Brno hlavní nádraží (main station) is a short walk from Freedom Square, Brno-Turany Airport connects to the centre by bus and taxi, and accommodation near náměstí Svobody, Česká and the main station fills early for New Year's Eve and the extended Christmas market period. For rooftop views over the lights, head up to Špilberk Castle or Petrov hill, where the Cathedral of St Peter and Paul stands.
Check the Programme Before You Book
The exact stage line-up for the 2026 squares was not fully published as of early September 2026. Check vanocebrno.cz and gotobrno.cz in late autumn for confirmed times, then match them against the Philharmonic's New Year concert listing and the club nights you want. With the date fixed on a Thursday and the centre walkable end to end, you can plan a New Year's Eve that starts at the markets, moves between the two squares, and lands wherever the music is still playing on the first morning of 2027.
