Stand in Old Town Square as the Tree Comes Alive
It is late afternoon on 24 December and the light has already gone. Above you, a 26-metre spruce from the Ústí nad Labem region carries 95,000 LED lights and a dressing of stars and red-and-gold baubles. Every half hour from 16:30 to 21:30 the tree is lit in a short ceremony, cued to Ewa Farna's song "Vánoce na míru" — and the audio carries through the market speakers, so the whole square hears it at once. Around you the huts are decorated in the style of a Czech village, the open-air stage is running Christmas music and dance, and there is a nativity scene to walk past. Christmas Eve is a normal trading day here: the Old Town and Wenceslas Square markets run 28 November 2026 to 6 January 2027, daily 10:00–22:00, free to enter. The two squares are five minutes apart on foot.
- Old Town Square: handicraft and food huts, the big tree, open-air stage, nativity scene, illuminated viewing platform (free entry). The Old Town Hall Tower nearby gives you a higher panorama for a fee.
- Wenceslas Square: its own huts and 15-metre tree, an open-air stage, artisan craft demonstrations, a nativity scene and an ice rink with skate and aid hire — no advance booking.
- Stage timings: Old Town Square daily 16:00–19:00, with school choirs in traditional costume; Wenceslas Square performances Thursday to Sunday, 16:00–18:00.
- Children's workshops at Old Town Square run Saturdays and Sundays, 11:00–15:00, making traditional Czech Christmas decorations.
Eat Your Way Through the Huts — Then Find the Carp
The market food is the point, not a side effect. Follow the smoke: roast ham on spits, grilled sausages, grilled fish, langoš, hranolky, carp fries, smoked-meat dumplings, grilled oštiepok cheese, oysters and roasted chestnuts. The Christmas fish soup, rybí polévka, is made with carp, vegetables, cream and brandy — over 1,500 kg of carp goes into it each year. For sweets there is gingerbread, marzipan, trdelník, sweet dumplings, crêpes and waffles, and vegetarian and gluten-free options are available. To drink: Czech beer (Pilsner Urquell, Budvar, Staropramen — the markets pour exclusively Czech beer), cider, sparkling wine, mulled wine made with Moravian grapes, hot mead, hot apple, punch, hot chocolate and grog. Drinks come in recycled rPET or returnable cups — look for the Cup Return Huts, and note the cup collectors on the bins.
Then do as Prague does: from 15 to 24 December 2026, live carp are sold from tanks at spots around the city, usually close to the markets. Buy yours and you have the traditional Christmas Eve dinner — fried carp with potato salad — which is also served in restaurants that evening.
Markets Beyond the Two Big Squares
The centre is not the whole story, and Christmas Eve is the last day for several of the smaller markets. Each has a different character and a different closing date, so plan the 24th accordingly.
- Prague Castle — a small, intimate market.
Gift stalls generally stay open until 22:00 and refreshment stands until midnight. Note that the Czech Republic observes Christmas over three days — 24, 25 and 26 December — and many museums and shops are partially or fully closed.
Concerts, Lamplight and a Bridge at Dusk
If you want an evening indoors, the Advent concerts at the National Theatre fall on 29 November and 6, 13 and 20 December 2026, with the National Theatre orchestra and the Philharmonic children's choir; the programme includes Jiří Teml's "Holy Night" and Jakub Jan Ryba's "Czech Christmas Mass", and the concerts benefit SONS, the guide-dog charity. Across the season the National Theatre also stages The Nutcracker Ballet: A Christmas Carol, and Dvořák's Rusalka, which premiered there in 1901 (tickets roughly 250–1,390 CZK). The State Opera's family-friendly Hansel and Gretel, with clowns, acrobats and puppets and suitable from age five, plays on 4, 13 and 23 December 2026 and 1 January 2027 (tickets roughly 350–890 CZK).
Outdoors, the quiet ritual is the Lamplighter of Charles Bridge, 1–23 December 2026, 16:00–16:15 daily: a lamplighter in 19th-century dress lights the gas lamps, starting on the Old Town side. Charles Bridge is more than 660 years old and is described as the only remaining bridge in the world lit by gas lamps. Earlier in the month, on 5 December 2026, Old Town Square fills with Mikuláš — locals dressed as angels, devils and saints, with children reciting poems and songs for sweets, or coal from the devil.
Christmas Eve Itself, Hour by Hour
Christmas Eve in Prague is a market day, not a shutdown. The Old Town and Wenceslas Square markets open as usual at 10:00 and trade until 22:00, with free entry. The tree ceremonies run at 16:30, 17:30, 18:30, 19:30, 20:30 and 21:30. The Old Town stage plays from 16:00 to 19:00. The carp tanks are in their final day. The small markets at Peace Square and Republic Square close for the season at 20:00. If you want the traditional dinner rather than a hut meal, fried carp with potato salad is served in restaurants on Christmas Eve.
Dress for it properly. December averages around 4°C by day and -1°C overnight, but sunny spells can push it to 10°C and snow periods can drop it to -10°C or -15°C. And if you are still in the city after Christmas, two dates are worth holding: 26 December 2026 at 11:00, when the Boxing Day swimmers take to the Vltava between Slavonic Island and Střelecký Island near the National Theatre — a tradition dating to 1923 — and 3 January 2027, when the Three Kings procession is blessed at 15:00 at the Church of St. Thomas and sets off at 15:30 from Malostranské Square, three kings on camels crossing Charles Bridge to Old Town Square for a concert of traditional Christmas songs.
Book the flights for the days around 24 December 2026, pick a hotel within walking distance of Old Town Square so you can move between the two big markets on foot, and keep the evening of the 24th free for the tree ceremonies and a bowl of rybí polévka. Everything above runs on a fixed annual rhythm — check the official programme closer to the date for the 2026 market theme, announced in November, and for any changes to performance schedules.
