Start at the Rink, Then Follow the Lights Up Powell Street

By mid-afternoon on Christmas Day the fog has usually burned off Union Square, and the ice rink below the palms is full of people in rented skates circling under the Macy's windows. The rink runs daily from 10 am to 11 pm, November 4, 2026 through January 18, 2027 — admission is $22 including skate rental, $17 for ages nine and under, with lockers at $5. If the square is too crowded, Yerba Buena Gardens keeps an indoor rink open year-round.

From the square, walk up Powell Street — or take the cable car — and turn left onto California for the steep climb to Nob Hill. The Fairmont's lobby holds a life-size walk-through gingerbread house built of real gingerbread, candy and icing (admire it; don't eat it), complete with a toy train, from November 21, 2026 through New Year. Holiday tea and a Christmas buffet are served there, and you can book a private meal inside the gingerbread house itself. Nearby hotel trees worth a detour: the Palace Hotel at 2 New Montgomery Street, the Ritz-Carlton at 600 Stockton Street with its 40-foot tree, and the Neiman Marcus atrium.

Messiahs, Carols and a Christmas Eve Tradition

San Francisco takes its holiday music seriously, and Christmas week is dense with it. The city's claim on the season is genuine: San Francisco Ballet gave the American premiere of The Nutcracker at the War Memorial Opera House on Christmas Eve 1944, and the company returns with its annual production for 2026 — check SF Ballet for exact dates.

If you want a stage show, A.C.T.'s annual Dickens' Christmas Carol moves in 2026 to the Hofmann Theater at the Lesher Center for the Arts in Walnut Creek, running December 11–23.

Victorians, Chestnuts and the Cow Palace

The Dickens Christmas Fair fills the Cow Palace for five weekends, November 21–December 20, 2026, 10 am–6 pm — a recreation of Victorian London with costumed actors, shops, pubs, plays, pantomimes, Punch and Judy and roaming carols, a San Francisco tradition since 1970. Tickets are sold online only, no door sales: $50 for adults, $30 for ages 5–12, under 5 free, parking $20 per car. It closes before Christmas Day, so slot it into the run-up.

At Pier 39, the 60-foot tree is officially lit December 3, 2026 at 6 pm, and synchronized light-and-music shows run hourly from 5 to 10 pm nightly through the first week of January. Civic Center Plaza's tree lighting falls on December 2, 4–7 pm, with musical performances and a Santa appearance across from City Hall. Ghirardelli Square keeps a large tree with music, crafts, hot cocoa, outdoor Christmas movie screenings and walk-in Santa photos (2026 appearance to be announced). The Presidio Main Post tree lighting, with carols, refreshments and a lantern walk, has its date to be confirmed.

Kittens in the Windows and Santa Around the City

Macy's Union Square holiday windows run November 20–December 31, 2026, 12–5 pm, with SPCA kittens and puppies available for adoption inside them — a 30-year tradition, and the flagship store is open this season even as closure is planned. Note that Santa will not appear at Macy's Union Square in 2026, the first time since the 1940s apart from pandemic closures. For photos with him, head to Stonestown Galleria at 3251 20th Avenue, November 20–December 24, typically 11 am–7 pm, with pet photos offered and walk-ups available. The Union Square tree, sponsored by Macy's, stays lit from late November through January 1, 2027.

Plan Around the Calendar, Not Just the Day

Christmas Day itself is quiet in the way American holidays are — the rink, the hotel lobbies, the lit trees and the restaurants that choose to open carry the day. The fuller calendar sits in the weeks before: the fairs and markets close by mid-December, the carol services and Messiahs cluster in the first three weeks, and the trees stay lit into the new year. Book the ticketed events — the Fair, the Ballet, the Symphony, the sing-alongs — as soon as dates are confirmed, and build your Christmas Day around a skate, a walk up Nob Hill and whatever concert falls nearest.
