Count Down in Grand Park, Where the Whole City Shows Up
At 8 PM on December 31, the plaza at Gloria Molina Grand Park in Downtown LA fills with a crowd that keeps arriving until well past midnight. This is NYELA, the city's free street festival — no ticket required — running 8 PM to 1 AM with two stages of DJs and live sets, food trucks parked along the edges, and at midnight, an art projection cast across the face of City Hall. Four entrances keep the crowd moving: Olive & 1st, Hill & Temple, Hill & 1st, and Main & 1st. Arrive early enough to eat before the stages draw their biggest numbers.
Find Your Midnight Somewhere Higher
If you want the countdown with a view, Downtown's rooftop bars and hotel lounges run ticketed New Year's Eve parties most years — call ahead, since pricing is set by each venue. Across the city, several marquee fireworks viewing spots, including Universal CityWalk, have shifted from free walk-up viewing to ticketed entry in recent years, and policies vary by venue, so confirm before you go. For the fireworks with a park attached, Universal Studios Hollywood stays open until 2 AM with three party zones — Rock the Night, Electric New Year, and Latin Beat — and midnight fireworks visible from multiple areas, including the Wizarding World and Springfield. Entry is included with standard admission and Platinum Passes; other pass tiers may need an add-on ticket.
Dance Until the Countdown, Then Keep Going
Downtown's LA Convention Center hosts Forever Midnight, an Insomniac house and EDM festival with three stages running from the afternoon into the early morning. It's 21+, past lineups have included Tiësto and Chris Lake, and general admission runs into the hundreds of dollars on a tiered pricing scale. Smaller rooms do their own versions: Avalon Hollywood on Vine Street holds an annual 21+ countdown party with past acts including Diplo and Markus Schulz, and Exchange LA runs a multi-level 21+ club show with tiered tickets. Headliners and DJ-night prices are typically announced closer to the date. If you'd rather move between venues, organized bar crawls run in Downtown LA (Nasstive's, with a venue list released in the fall), Santa Monica (multi-bar, VIP access, free entry at venues, drink specials, and a free after-party), and Pasadena, where check-in runs 6–9 PM at Behind Bars before moving through Urban Pocha, Ole Town Pub, and Der Wolf, with a champagne toast and an after-party at Behind Bars for arrivals before 11 PM. All are 21+ with photo ID.
Run the Parade Route, Roast the Year, or Bring the Kids
- Lululemon Run With the Roses 5K, Pasadena: now in its third year, this race runs the Rose Parade route along Colorado Boulevard, with the main wave starting near midnight. Finishers 13 and over get a bib, medal, and entry to the post-race party, and there's a "Beat the Countdown Challenge" for sub-20-minute finishes. Registration fees rise closer to the date.
- Roast Battle: NYE Edition, The Comedy Store Belly Room: two comics, a roast format, celebrity judges, and a live DJ on the Sunset Strip. It regularly sells out.
- Noon Year's Eve at Discovery Cube LA, Sylmar: a daytime countdown for kids with an apple cider toast, science exhibits, a dance floor, and balloon drops at noon and 3 PM. Timed tickets are $5 for members and $7 for non-members on top of admission.
- Family New Year's Eve at L.A. Zoo Lights (Animals Aglow), Griffith Park: 6–10 PM with express entry, a buffet dinner and dessert, a kids' dance floor, a ball-drop broadcast, and a 9 PM sparkling toast (cider for the kids). $79 for kids, $95 for adults.
- New Year's Eve Night Dive, Aquarium of the Pacific, Long Beach: 8 PM–1 AM with a live band, DJs, a magic show, and a confetti countdown among the tanks. Now 18+, with 21+ ID required for alcohol. From $84.95 for members, $89.95 general admission.
- New Year's Eve Musical Revue, Santa Monica Playhouse: a tradition of more than 50 years, with two shows on December 31 — a 7 PM family-friendly performance and a 10:30 PM show with a midnight cast meet-and-greet. Every ticket includes champagne or sparkling cider and a dessert buffet, from $49.50 for the early show. It tends to sell out.
- Premier Dinner Cruise, Long Beach: a four-hour sail from Rainbow Harbor with a buffet dinner, sparkling wine toast, DJ, and views of the Long Beach waterfront fireworks at midnight. It sells out early, with pricing posted when booking opens in the fall.
- Topgolf El Segundo: 9 PM–1 AM with unlimited play, a buffet, a live DJ, and a midnight toast (21+ for alcohol), priced per bay for up to six people.
Eat First, Plan Early, Ride the Metro
Restaurants across the city add prix-fixe New Year's Eve menus, and the popular ones book up by mid-December — the same deadline by which most ticketed events sell out. LA Metro typically runs extended New Year's Eve service, so check current service alerts before you decide how you're getting home. Nightclubs and most bar crawls require 21+ with photo ID.
Start with the free one: NYELA at Grand Park costs nothing, runs until 1 AM, and puts you in the middle of the city when the projection hits City Hall. Build the rest of the night around it — a dinner reservation, a rooftop, a club set that runs past sunrise — and book the pieces that need booking before mid-December arrives.
