New Year's Eve on Wangfujing, February 5, 2027
By late afternoon on Spring Festival Eve, the city is already closing. Shops pull their shutters, the hutong lanes go quiet, and the streets empty as families sit down to the reunion dinner. Head for Wangfujing, where the restaurants in the tourist quarter mostly stay open through the holiday, and you'll eat in a Beijing that feels unusually still. Order the dumplings — northern families make them the centrepiece of the Eve meal — and step back out into the cold. Daytime highs in early February sit around 0–5°C, so dress for it. Chinese New Year's Day falls on Saturday, February 6, 2027, opening the Year of the Goat, and the public holiday runs from February 5 through roughly February 11–12.
Eat dumplings, then walk the lantern-lit temple fairs
The temple fair is Beijing's main cultural event of the season. Fairs generally run from around the second to the sixth day of the new year, which in 2027 means the days after February 6. Note that the first three days — February 6–8 — are the deepest shutdown, with most businesses, restaurants and shops closed; the fairs and the reopening gather pace from about February 9.
- Ditan Park (Temple of Earth): the largest fair, held here over lunar new year since the 1980s. Expect traditional performances, folk arts and snack alleys, with thousands of red lanterns hung from the park trees. Come hungry: candied hawthorn (bingtang hulu), fried dough twists and lamb skewers are the standard fare.
- Longtan Park: the family-oriented alternative, with a gentler pace than Ditan.
- Changdian: the fair to choose if you want arts and crafts over crowds — though all three are extremely busy, so go early and expect to shuffle.
Beyond the fairs, the seasonal kitchen keeps to a fixed menu: niangao (sticky rice cake), whole fish and chicken, and hot pot against the cold. On the quiet days of February 6–8, when the hutong shops are shut, your hotel breakfast and the international fast-food chains and mall food courts are the reliable options.
Skate on a half-frozen Kunming Lake and climb a snowy wall
Winter gives Beijing two spectacles the summer crowds never see. At the Summer Palace, Kunming Lake partially freezes and locals come out to skate on it — go and watch, or join in. The Forbidden City stays open through the holiday, but entry is capped at 80,000 visitors a day and it sells out; tickets are released online about seven days ahead, so set a reminder and book the moment they appear. For the Great Wall, choose Mutianyu over Badaling: it handles the holiday crowds better, and the snowy scenery is the reason to come in February at all.
Know what the holiday does to the city — and plan around it
Spring Festival is the largest annual human migration, and Beijing's version of it runs from roughly January 23 to March 5, 2027. In the days before the Eve the city empties as migrants and students travel home; train tickets release 15 days before departure and sell out within seconds, so book flights or a private driver for any intercity move, and book accommodation far ahead — hotel prices spike two- to four-fold over the holiday. Fireworks are restricted or banned in many large cities for air quality, so don't count on a display; where they are permitted, it is only in designated areas. If you want a lantern finale, the Lantern Festival closes the season on Saturday, February 20, 2027, when red lanterns go up and the city eats tangyuan — glutinous rice balls filled with red bean, sesame or peanut.
Base yourself centrally, then move mid-festival
The practical rhythm of the fortnight is simple: stay put for the first days, when the city is shuttered and the streets are quiet, then move between cities mid-festival once the fairs and restaurants reopen. Keep to one or two bases early on, check holiday opening hours before you set out each morning, and carry your booking ID — nearly all trains require tickets linked to your passenger ID. A single well-placed hotel near the tourist quarter puts the open restaurants of Wangfujing and the fairs of Ditan within reach on the days when little else is running.
Start with the dates: February 5 for the Eve, February 6 for New Year's Day, and the fair days that follow. Book the Forbidden City the week tickets release, reserve your room before prices climb, and let the quiet of New Year's morning be part of the trip rather than a surprise.
