Stand on Münsterplatz at Half Past Eleven
It is 23:30 on 31 December, and the red sandstone of Basel Münster is lit from below. The Stadtposaunenchor Basel — the city's trombone choir — plays Turmmusik from the tower, and the square fills with people who have walked up from the Rhine banks with glasses in their coat pockets. The old year is rung out here, in the open air, with communal singing. Münsterplatz is publicly accessible and the programme is free; normal church rules apply if you step inside. The lanes of the old town around you are illuminated, and the river runs dark below the terrace. This is where Basel gathers, and it is where you should be standing when the hour turns.
At 00:15 on 1 January there is a short service in the Münster, and at 10:00 the New Year's service — both in the same building you were just standing outside. Between them, the night belongs to you.
What Actually Happens at Midnight — and What Doesn't
If you are expecting a city-organised firework display over the Rhine, adjust your plan. Basel has not held large official New Year's Eve fireworks over the river for years. What happens instead is smaller and more local: private fireworks, permitted by Kanton Basel-Stadt only within a set time window and under conditions published shortly before the event. A dry winter can trigger a ban outright, so check bs.ch before you buy anything. The upside of no official display is that the centre stays walkable and the focus stays on the square, the services and the tables.

An Evening of Concerts, Then a Foyer Party
Basel's New Year culture programme is built around two institutions. The Sinfonieorchester Basel plays a New Year's Eve concert on 31 December 2026 at the Stadtcasino, and a New Year's concert on 1 January 2027 at the Theater. Theater Basel itself stages performances on 31 December and throws a New Year's Eve party in its foyer; ballet, opera and drama are also on the schedule across the period. Theatre tickets typically run around €32–155 (roughly 30–145 CHF), sold through the venues, Theater Basel and the usual ticket platforms. If you want the concert and the party in one night, buy early — this is the busiest evening of the Basel year.
Where to Eat, Drink and Keep Going
Festive New Year's menus appear in hotels and restaurants across the city from about 18:00 or 19:00, with gala evenings commonly priced around €85–230 per person (menus often 115–210 CHF depending on the venue and the number of courses). For the later hours, clubs and bars including Atlantis, Bar Rouge and Nordstern publish their party programmes in the autumn; tickets vary in price and are sometimes included with a performance ticket.

Getting There, Staying Warm, Staying the Night
You will arrive at Basel SBB, Basel Badischer Bahnhof or EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg, and move around by tram and bus on the BVB network — which runs its night service through the night of 31 December 2026 into 1 January 2027, so you are not stranded after midnight. Late December in Basel is cold, often around freezing, and windy along the Rhine; wear warm layers, gloves and sturdy shoes, because Münsterplatz and the river banks are paved and can be icy underfoot. Book your hotel early: the old town, the Rhine-side quarters of Grossbasel and Kleinbasel, and the area near SBB are all in demand for the New Year weekend.
Start with the hotel and the dinner table — those are the two things that disappear first. Then build the night around 23:30 on Münsterplatz, and let the trombones do the rest.
