New Year's Day in Ottawa 2027

Ottawa, Canada

Start on the Hill, Where the Lights Are Still On

Parliament Hill stays lit through the first days of January, the tail end of Winter Lights Across Canada, which runs from early December into early January. The illumination is the city's own signal that the season isn't over: you walk up from Wellington Street in the dark, the Peace Tower above you, and the grounds glow while the Ottawa River runs cold and black below the bluff. The exact ceremony date for the 2026–27 edition is set closer to the season, but the window is reliable, and the lights are typically still burning on 1 January. Go after dusk, when the crowds thin and the cold keeps the walk brisk.

Find Out Whether the Skateway Is Open — Then Skate It

The Rideau Canal Skateway is the one thing that can define your New Year's Day here, and the one thing nobody can promise you. The National Capital Commission opens the 7.8-kilometre stretch in stages, only after daily ice-thickness checks, and it cannot be scheduled in advance. The 2025–26 season, the 56th, opened on 31 December 2025 and ran into early January 2026 — so a 1 January skate is possible, not guaranteed. Check the NCC's status before you build your day around it. If it's open, rent skates at the canal, join the locals moving in both directions, and stop for a hot drink at one of the rest areas along the ice.

Spend the Afternoon Indoors at the National Gallery

When the wind off the river wins, the National Gallery of Canada is the answer, and both of its winter exhibitions run straight through New Year 2027. Diego Rivera Meets Henry Moore is confirmed from 27 February 2026 to 28 February 2027. Takao Tanabe: Inside Passage runs 27 November 2026 to 18 April 2027. That gives you two substantial shows to fill a cold first day of the year, a short walk from the ByWard Market and the canal. Book ahead if you're travelling in a group.

Eat and Wander in the ByWard Market

The ByWard Market is where you'll find the city's winter street life on a holiday — cafés, bakeries and restaurants open for people who'd rather not cook on 1 January. Pair it with the canal: the Market sits at the northern end of the Skateway, so a morning on the ice and an afternoon of warm food is a natural circuit. This is also your base for the evening if you want to stay out rather than retreat to a hotel room.

Know What January Doesn't Have — and Plan Around It

Book your accommodation near the ByWard Market or Centretown so the canal, the Hill and the Gallery are all walkable, then check the NCC's ice conditions and the National Gallery's hours in the final weeks before 1 January 2027. The city won't hand you a schedule for that day — it hands you a frozen canal, a lit Parliament, and two exhibitions worth the flight. Plan for those, and let the weather decide the rest.
