Light Up a December Night at Candy Cane Lane

Start in Crestwood, where the residential light tradition of Candy Cane Lane has run since 1968. From mid-December through early January, the neighbourhood's front lawns and eaves turn into a walkable, driveable corridor of displays that locals have been building for more than half a century. Bundle up, take a thermos, and go slowly — this is the closest Edmonton gets to a collective front-porch welcome.

From there, the city's light season spreads out in every direction. At RAD Torque Raceway, Magic of Lights is a 2.5 km drive-through route with more than two million LED lights, a 200-foot light tunnel and a 32-foot animated Barbie figure, running from late November to early January. Glow: The Enchanted Forest fills more than 100,000 square feet inside the Edmonton EXPO Centre with indoor light installations and a local artisan market. Zoominescence brings artistic light works to the Edmonton Valley Zoo. And at the Muttart Conservatory, the four greenhouses carry a seasonal holiday display in the feature pyramid — book the Café Bloom dome dining ahead, and watch for adult-only nights with live music.

Shop the Christmas Markets and Craft Fairs

Edmonton's holiday market season is dense and varied, and most of it clusters in the first three weeks of December.

Pair a market morning with a winter walk and a patio stop. Sea Change Brewing Co., Tiramisu Bistro and the tented Black Dog Wooftop keep patios going year-round, while The Next Act, Little Brick and Cafe Bicyclette are reliable winter warm-up stops.

Catch a Concert, a Musical or a Game

The city's December stages run from Dickens to Die Hard. At the Citadel Theatre, David van Belle's 1950s-set adaptation of A Christmas Carol plays from late November through Christmas Eve. Grindstone Theatre stages Die Harsh: A Christmas Musical, a Die Hard parody, in mid-to-late December. The Winspear hosts Christmas with Johnny Reid alongside the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, and the FILMharmonique Orchestra performs Disney Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas in concert. Cirque Musica Holiday Wonderland brings its show to River Cree Resort & Casino in early December.

If you'd rather watch sport, Rogers Place is the venue to know. The Canada vs. USA Rivalry Series brings two women's hockey games in mid-December — the final pre-2026 Winter Olympics meeting between the two teams, and the first Canadian women's team game at Rogers Place since 2017. The PWHL Takeover Tour lands Minnesota Frost vs. Vancouver Goldeneyes at Rogers Place on December 27. Nitro Circus brings FMX, BMX, skate and scooter to the city in mid-December. Local music fills out the calendar too, with shows across the month including Air Supply at the EXPO Centre on December 20 and Cadence Weapon on December 27.

Take the Cold Seriously — and Get Outside

Edmonton's winter is the point, not an obstacle. In the river valley, Climb YEG runs a 21-metre ice climbing structure year-round, with gear rental and intro courses if you've never swung an axe. City park sites including Emily Murphy Park and Rundle Park are set up for winter picnics and campfire barbecues — check fire bans before you go.

For a proper day trip, drive 35 minutes east to Elk Island National Park. Snowshoe or day-hike the trails, skate, and watch for plains bison, moose, elk, lynx, black bears and gray wolves among some 250 bird species. It's a dark sky preserve, which makes it one of the region's best bets for Northern Lights viewing on a clear night.

Plan Around the Season, Not Just the Day

Boxing Day itself falls inside a broader stretch of holiday programming rather than carrying its own dedicated slate of events — so build your trip around the weeks on either side. Markets and craft fairs peak in early to mid-December, concerts and pantos run through Christmas Eve and beyond, and the light displays at RAD Torque Raceway, the Muttart, the Valley Zoo and Candy Cane Lane stretch from late November into the first days of January. Book dome dining and any ticketed performance well ahead, keep an eye on fire bans for outdoor fires, and layer up: most of what makes an Edmonton December memorable happens outside.
