Watch the Sky Above the Water at Kallang Basin
On the evening of 9 August, the fireworks break over Kallang Basin at roughly 7:30pm, and the State Flag Flypast traces that same stretch of water for the first time. The National Day Parade itself returns to the National Stadium in Kallang, marking the first time in years the celebration has moved away from Marina Bay. If you want to understand the scale of the day before it arrives, head to the stadium on a Saturday in the weeks beforehand — rehearsals run every Saturday in the lead-up to 9 August, and the crowds along the water are thinner, the atmosphere looser.
Walk Into Free Light Installations and Open-Air Singalongs
From 1 August to 5 September, the Bras Basah.Bugis precinct hosts Light Together Bras Basah.Bugis, a free outdoor trail of light and digital installations across five locations: the Reflection Pool at Bras Basah MRT, Stamford Walkway, the National Museum (for the first fortnight only), Artsplace @ Waterloo Centre, and Stamford Place. The theme draws on local folklore, and the precinct keeps later opening hours on Fridays and Saturdays. It runs alongside Singapore Night Festival, so you can fold one into the other. Full details at heritage.sg/brasbasahbugis.
Two days before the parade, on 8 August from 7–8pm, SingNation! National takes over the Capitol Singapore Outdoor Plaza at 13 Stamford Rd. It is a free open-air singalong with no registration required, featuring a one-day choir drawn from Voices of Singapore members and led by the choir's Artistic Director with a live band. Later that same evening, Majulah Mess runs afternoon-to-night at The Pantry, 16A Dempsey Road, with five local collectives across two stages — Treehouse Stage hosts 5210PM, Secret Pals and Sivilian Affairs; SuperVision Stage hosts Revision Music and Super Enjoy. Food and drinks come from The Pantry, there are kids' activities, kids get in free and adults are ticketed via Eventbrite.
Hear a National Day Concert on the Meadow
On 2 August, the National Day Concert takes place at The Meadow, Gardens by the Bay (18 Marina Gardens Dr). Gates open at 4:30pm with carnival games, craft activities and food stalls including Old Chang Kee and Uncle Otah; the concert begins at 7:45pm. The line-up includes Olivia Ong, Hady Mirza, Shak, Sherman Zhuo, school ensembles and a mass singalong. Admission is free. If you miss it in person, it broadcasts on Channel 5 and mewatch on 10 August at 7:30pm, with a repeat on 15 August.
For something more formal, the Singapore Symphony Orchestra National Day Concert is at Victoria Concert Hall, 9 Empress Place, on 15 August. Conductor Lien Boon Hua leads a programme of composers Kelly Tang, Tsao Chieh, Sulwyn Lok and Germaine Goh, including winners of the NDC Call for Compositions. Performers include guitarist Kevin Loh, zhongruan player Jonathan Ngeow and deaf artist-performer Lily Goh. It is redeemable under SG Culture Pass.

Make a Day of the Unusual and the Neighbourhood
If you want something off the parade route, head to 77 Tras Street in Tanjong Pagar on 11 August for capybara bathing: a single ticket gives two entries, with a studio takeover by ANOTHER LAND and live acoustic sets by Us the Hippies. Slots are limited. Between events, build your day around the precincts — Bras Basah.Bugis for the light trail and night festival, Kallang for the parade and fireworks, Dempsey for the evening street party, and Orchard, Marina Bay and Shenton Way for the hotel tables. Everything above clusters within easy reach of the MRT, so you can move between a free singalong, a market stall and a set menu without crossing the island twice.
Start with the dates that matter: 1 August for the light trail, 2 August for the meadow concert, 8 August for the singalong and Dempsey, 9 August for the parade and fireworks, and 15 August for the symphony. Book the ticketed tables and stages early, keep the free events as your flexible spine, and let the rehearsals on the Saturdays before give you a preview of the whole city at its most crowded and most alive.
