Christmas Morning on Herrengasse, With the City to Yourself

On December 25 in Graz, the Christmas markets are closed, and the crowds that pressed through Franziskanerviertel have gone home. What remains is the city itself: Herrengasse lit end to end, the Christmas tree still standing on the Hauptplatz, and the towers and courtyards of the Old Town — a UNESCO World Heritage Site together with the Schlossberg — quiet enough that you hear your own footsteps on the cobbles. This is the one day of the Advent season when Graz belongs to whoever is willing to walk it.

Walk the Old Town While the Markets Sleep

The markets close on December 23 or 24, depending on the market, and no markets open on Christmas Day. That doesn't empty the centre — it changes what you do with it. The "Advent of short distances" that defines Graz at Christmas means the Hauptplatz, Franziskanerviertel, Glockenspielplatz, Mehlplatz and Freiheitsplatz all sit within a walkable cluster, so you can trace the whole route in an unhurried morning. On December 24, several of these — Hauptplatz, Franziskanerviertel, Glockenspielplatz, Mehlplatz and Freiheitsplatz — open with reduced hours, usually until 14:00 or 16:00, which makes Christmas Eve your last chance for market browsing before the city goes still.

Ride the Funicular, Skate Beneath the Schlossberg

Christmas Day is a good day for the city's vertical pleasures. Reach the Schlossberg by funicular or elevator for the view over the red rooftops, then come down to the Grazer Winterwelt, a 3,000 m² ice rink in the city centre with the Schlossberg as its backdrop. Check rink hours ahead, as Christmas Day schedules are not published in the sources. To move between the Old Town stops, use the AltstadtBim tram, which is free at certain stops within the Old Town.

Krampus, LUMAGICA and the Season's Other Rituals

Some of Graz's Christmas traditions fall before the holiday rather than on it — worth knowing if you're shaping a longer stay. Krampus parades run in Graz and the surrounding region, with hand-carved masks, bells and traditional rituals. In Frohnleiten, LUMAGICA at Murhof is an illuminated light park with figures, music and winter landscapes along a walking trail. The city also runs an Advent Tram and Christmas sightseeing train decorated with lights, plus an Old Town tram, and lists the Büro für Weihnachtslieder among its seasonal highlights. Guided excursions to Christmas destinations across the Graz Region run on weekends leading up to Christmas.

What to Eat, and Where the Season Extends Beyond the City

Christmas Day itself is a restaurant day rather than a market day, so plan your meals in the city centre or at your hotel. For the surrounding Advent weeks, market food — sausages, waffles, sweets — runs roughly €5–12, and Glühwein or Punsch costs about €3–5 plus a €2 mug deposit, refunded when you return the mug (€5 at Aufsteirern). Budget around €20–25 per person per day for food and drink. If you're staying beyond the holiday, the region around Graz adds Piber Castle, the Austrian Open-Air Museum Stübing, Rein Abbey and Advent in St. Bartholomä, all reachable on the weekend excursions. Two full days covers the markets, Old Town and Schlossberg; three lets you add Eggenberg Palace, the museums, or a Styria excursion. The city is described as safe at night, with market areas and the centre well-lit and busy.

Plan Around November 20, Not December 25

The heart of a Graz Christmas sits in the weeks before the holiday: markets open November 20, 2026, lights from November 19, the ice nativity from November 28, and everything winds down December 23–24. Build your trip so Christmas Day is the quiet centrepiece — a walkable, illuminated Old Town with no queues — and let the market days fall either side of it. The official Advent brochure, "Advent in der Erlebnisregion Graz 2026," is available to view online, download or order by post, and schedules can shift year to year, so confirm details with official sources before you book.
