New Year's Eve in les Escaldes 2026

les Escaldes, Andorra

Midnight on the Plaça del Poble

You climb out of the car park lift on Carrer del Prat de la Creu and the valley opens in front of you. Above, the floodlit stones of the Plaça del Poble — the rooftop square sitting over the government building in Andorra la Vella's historic centre — hold a crowd wrapped in hats and gloves, breath steaming, cava glasses catching the Christmas lights strung down Avinguda Meritxell below. This is the capital's main public focus on 31 December, and the view over the Pyrenees from the parapet is part of the ritual. The municipal fireworks are traditionally launched here at midnight; the square and the fireworks are generally free to attend. The Comú d'Andorra la Vella usually publishes the full programme — acts, exact fireworks time, market hours — in autumn, so check visitandorra.com and andorralavella.ad/nadal from November.

Les Escaldes, joined to the capital along the same valley floor, is where the evening extends past the official countdown. Recent winters have brought extra parties here, including the Balland association's public New Year ball, which has run at roughly 25 EUR in recent years. Treat that price as a reference, not a quote for 2026.

Eat twelve grapes, then find the cava

Andorran New Year follows the Spanish custom: twelve grapes at midnight, one for each chime, swallowed fast, with cava to follow. Hotel gala dinners are the standard format on 31 December, and many hotels sell dinner-inclusive packages only — often well above 80 EUR per person — so book accommodation early if you want a table without hunting for one. Restaurants across Andorra la Vella and Escaldes-Engordany run special New Year menus alongside the hotel packages.

A concert on New Year's Day

The morning after, the Orquestra Nacional Clàssica d'Andorra gives its traditional New Year concert at the Centre de Congressos d'Andorra la Vella on Plaça del Poble, s/n. In 2026 it began at 19:00, with tickets around 30 EUR in advance and 40 EUR on the door. The 2027 edition's time and pricing were not published at the time of writing — check the official channels in the autumn. It is a calm, seated counterweight to the night before, and it fills; reserve ahead.

Soak, ski, then close the season with the Three Kings

Escaldes-Engordany's own asset is Caldea, the thermal spa, which works as a pre-night warm-up or a 1 January recovery. If you are skiing, both Grandvalira and Pal-Arinsal host their own events over the period — allow transfer time from the centre, and note that taxis are scarce after midnight, so stay within walking distance of the square and keep the day trips to daylight hours.

The festive window does not shut on the 1st. Three Kings parades on 5 January close it in the capital, a second celebration worth staying for if your plans are flexible.

What to wear, and how to get there

Start with the calendar: watch visitandorra.com and andorralavella.ad/nadal from November for the municipal programme, book a dinner-inclusive room in Andorra la Vella or Escaldes-Engordany before the valley fills, and put the New Year concert and the 5 January parades in the diary while seats and plans are still yours to choose.
