Saint Nicholas Day in Belgium

Saint Nicholas Day, also known as Sinterklaasfeest in Dutch-speaking regions and la Saint-Nicolas in French-speaking areas, is celebrated in Belgium on the morning of 6 December. This feast day honors Saint Nicholas of Myra, a Christian saint known for his generosity and reputation as a bringer of gifts. The celebration falls within the season of Advent and combines religious observance with festive family traditions.

Origin and Meaning

According to Christian tradition, Nicholas of Myra was born in Patara in Asia Minor and became the Bishop of Myra. He is celebrated for his acts of generosity, most famously for giving money to a poor father to prevent his daughters from being sold into slavery—a gift he threw through their window where it landed in their shoes by the fireplace. Nicholas died on 6 December 346, which led to the establishment of his feast day on this date.

The practice of giving gifts in the name of Saint Nicholas originated in the 11th century when Christian nuns in Belgium and France began giving gifts to the poor in his honor. This custom gradually spread throughout Europe, particularly to Germany and Holland, establishing the Feast of Saint Nicholas and its associated traditions.

How Saint Nicholas Day Is Celebrated in Belgium

Arrival and Procession

One of the most significant events is Sinterklaas's arrival by steamboat around mid-November each year. His annual entry into Antwerp is a major celebration typically attended by hundreds of children. During this event, Sinterklaas wears traditional bishop's robes including a red cape and mitre, and he rides a white horse.

Customs and Traditions

Belgian children prepare for Saint Nicholas Day by putting out shoes filled with hay and a carrot for Sinterklaas's donkey. On the eve of the celebration, children leave their shoes out in hopes of receiving gifts. The tradition emphasizes rewarding good behavior—children who have been well-behaved during the year find gifts in their shoes, while those who have misbehaved may find a twig or piece of coal instead.

Gifts exchanged on Saint Nicholas Day are tagged with personal humorous rhymes written by the sender, adding a playful and creative element to the gift-giving tradition. Sinterklaas is assisted by helpers with black faces and colorful Moorish dress, called "Père Fouettard" in the French-speaking parts of Belgium.

Festivals and Events

The town of Sint-Niklaas in East Flanders hosts Sinterklaas celebrations and features a statue of Sinterklaas in front of its town hall. The steamboat arrival in Antwerp remains the most prominent public event, drawing large crowds of children and families who eagerly await Sinterklaas's arrival each year.

Religious Significance

Beyond the secular gift-giving customs, Saint Nicholas Day is observed as a Christian festival with attendance at church services. The celebration acknowledges Saint Nicholas as the patron saint of children and commemorates his legacy of charity and generosity within the Christian tradition.
