Finland

Overview

Finland, officially the Republic of Finland, is a Nordic country located in Northern Europe. It shares borders with Sweden to the northwest, Norway to the north, and Russia to the east, while its coastlines meet the Gulf of Bothnia to the west and the Gulf of Finland to the south, facing Estonia across the water. The capital and largest city is Helsinki, which serves as the country's political, economic, and cultural hub.

Geography and Climate

Covering an area of 338,455 square kilometres, Finland ranks as the eighth-largest country in Europe by land area. Despite its size, it has a relatively modest population of 5.7 million people, making it one of the more sparsely populated nations on the continent.

The Finnish landscape is dominated by vast stretches of boreal forest, giving the country a distinctly green and wild character. Finland is also famous for its water bodies, boasting more than 180,000 recorded lakes, a feature that has earned it recognition as a land of countless lakes and forests.

The country's climate shifts noticeably from north to south. Southern Finland experiences a humid continental climate, while the northern regions, closer to the Arctic Circle, have a boreal climate characterized by colder temperatures and longer winters.

Language and Culture

Finland has two official languages: Finnish and Swedish. Finnish is the mother tongue of the vast majority of the population, spoken by approximately 83.5 percent of residents, while Swedish is spoken natively by about 5.0 percent. This bilingual status reflects Finland's historical ties to Sweden and contributes to its unique cultural identity within the Nordic region.
