Travel Wiki Online (“Travel Wiki”, “we”, “us”) is a travel guide and destination encyclopedia available at travelwiki.online, operated by Chimera Media & IT. This policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and the choices you have. By using the site you agree to this policy.

Information we collect

Most of Travel Wiki is public content you can read without an account. We collect:

Account information — if you create an account (for example to save a trip in the trip planner), we store your username, email address, and the trips and preferences you save.
Usage and device data — like most websites, our servers and analytics record basic technical information such as IP address, browser type, pages visited, and referring links, to keep the service secure and understand what content is useful.
What you share with us — if you use “Share what you know”, we keep your messages, the facts our assistant gathers from them (what, where, when, price, how you know) and the page you came from, so our team can research them. Email addresses and phone numbers are removed from the gathered facts. We do not store your IP address with a submission, only a salted code that changes daily, to limit abuse. An email address is stored only if you type it in and tick the consent box, and is used only to ask you about that submission. Nothing you share is published directly.
Comments on our social posts — public comments on our YouTube, Bluesky, Mastodon and Facebook posts are read by our assistant to draft a reply, which a person reviews before it is posted. We keep the comment, the commenter’s public name and our reply.
Cookies and local storage — used to keep you signed in, remember preferences (such as language and light/dark theme), and measure aggregate traffic. You can clear or block cookies in your browser; some features may then not work.

How we use information

To provide and maintain the site and your saved trips.
To understand which destinations and guides are popular so we can improve our content.
To keep the service secure and prevent abuse.
To measure the performance of content we share on social platforms.
To research reader submissions and answer comments. These messages are processed by the AI services we use (such as DeepSeek and Anthropic, or our own servers) only to run the conversation or draft the reply.

Affiliate and partner links

Some links on Travel Wiki are affiliate or partner links (for example to accommodation, flight, and activity providers). If you follow one and make a booking or purchase, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. These links are tracked so the partner can attribute the referral; the partner’s own privacy policy governs any information you provide on their site. We mark such links as sponsored where practical.

Third-party services

We use third-party services to run and grow the site, including hosting and content-delivery providers, analytics, mapping (map tiles and geocoding), and social platforms such as Pinterest where we publish links back to our own pages. We also use a travel-affiliate monetization service (Travelpayouts), whose script runs in your browser to attribute affiliate referrals and measure engagement with travel offers, and may collect page-usage information under its own privacy policy. These providers process data on our behalf or under their own policies. We do not sell your personal information.

We publish our own posts and short videos to our accounts on Facebook, Bluesky, Mastodon, Telegram, Pinterest and YouTube. Links in those posts may use our own short links (travelwiki.online/s/…), which count how many people followed a link but do not store any personal information about you.

Analytics

By default we use privacy-friendly, cookieless first-party analytics that measure aggregate traffic without cookies and without sharing your data with third parties — no consent is required for this. In addition, we offer optional Google Analytics (GA4), which loads only if you accept it in our consent banner. If you accept, Google Analytics sets cookies and shares usage data with Google to give us aggregate audience insights (such as approximate age ranges and interests) under Google’s own privacy policy. If you decline, or make no choice, Google Analytics is never loaded and only the cookieless analytics above is used. You can change your mind at any time by clearing this site’s data in your browser, which brings the banner back.

YouTube API Services

Travel Wiki uses YouTube API Services to upload the short travel videos we produce to our own YouTube channel. We use the API only for our own account: we do not ask you to sign in with Google or YouTube, and we do not access, collect, store or share any YouTube or Google data about you. When you watch our videos on YouTube, YouTube’s own terms and Google’s privacy policy apply.

Some article pages show our own video in an embedded YouTube player. It uses YouTube’s privacy-enhanced mode (youtube-nocookie.com): YouTube does not set cookies until you press play. Once you play it, YouTube and Google’s terms and privacy policy apply to that video.

Data retention and security

We keep account data for as long as your account is active, submissions for as long as we need them to research and update our guides, and other data only as long as needed for the purposes above. You can ask us to delete a submission or the email address you left with it at any time. We use reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect information, though no method of transmission or storage is completely secure.

Your choices

You can access, correct, or delete your account information from your account settings, or by contacting us. You can control cookies through your browser. If you are in a region with data-protection rights (such as the EEA or UK), you may have additional rights to access, correct, delete, or restrict processing of your personal data.

Children

Travel Wiki is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their personal information.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. Material changes will be reflected by the “Last updated” date above.
