Overview
Dominica, officially known as the Commonwealth of Dominica, is an island country located in the Caribbean Sea. It forms part of the Windward Islands chain within the Lesser Antilles archipelago. Despite its Caribbean location, Dominica is sometimes classified as part of North America due to the broader geographic grouping of the region.
Geography
Dominica covers a land area of approximately 750 square kilometres (290 square miles). The island's terrain is notably mountainous, with its highest point, Morne Diablotins, rising to 1,448 metres (4,751 feet) above sea level.
The country shares maritime borders with two nearby territories, both of which are overseas departments of France and constituent territories of the European Union:
- Guadeloupe, located to the northwest
- Martinique, located to the south-southeast
Capital and Population
The capital city of Dominica is Roseau, situated on the western side of the island. According to the 2011 census, Dominica had a population of 71,293 people.
