Victoria Falls, popularly known as Vic Falls, is a resort town and city located in Matabeleland North province in northwestern Zimbabwe. Situated on the southern bank of the Zambezi River at the western end of Victoria Falls themselves, the city had a population of 35,199 according to the 2022 Population Census. The town serves as the primary access point from the Zimbabwean side to one of the world's most significant natural wonders.
The Victoria Falls waterfall itself is 1,708 meters wide with a maximum depth of 108 meters, making it the largest waterfall on Earth by volume. Water flows at up to 500 million liters per minute, creating spray that rises 400 meters during high-water season and can be heard up to 40 kilometers away. The falls consist of four main sections: Devil's Cataract (61 meters high), the Main Falls (83 meters), Rainbow Falls (99 meters), and the Eastern Cataract (98 meters). The site is protected as a transboundary UNESCO World Heritage Site shared with Zambia, encompassing Victoria Falls National Park in Zimbabwe (2,340 hectares) and managed through a joint integrated management plan established in 2007.
The town offers a range of accommodation options, from budget backpackers to luxury lodges, many within walking distance of the falls. Visitors can access various activities including white-water rafting, bungee jumping, and exploration of the national park's footpaths. The best time to visit for waterfall views is March through August during high-water season, while the low-water season from August to January is optimal for adventure activities like rafting. The town is connected to Livingstone, Zambia by the Victoria Falls Bridge, with border crossing facilities available.
