Matwah

Yemen

Matwah is a city in the Sanaa Governorate of Yemen. The governorate lies in the country's highland interior, and its administrative capital is the city of Sanaa, which also serves as Yemen's national capital. The city of Sanaa itself is not part of the governorate, however; it forms the separate governorate of Amanat Al-Asemah, leaving the surrounding Sanaa Governorate as a distinct administrative unit.

The governorate covers an area of roughly 13,850 square kilometres and had a population of about 2,918,379 inhabitants as of 2004. Matwah sits within this territory, in the same highland region that contains Jabal An-Nabi Shu'ayb, also known as Jabal Hadhur, the highest mountain in Yemen and the Arabian Peninsula.

Like other settlements in the Sanaa Governorate, Matwah belongs to one of Yemen's most elevated and densely populated interior regions, set among the mountains and plateaus that surround the national capital.
