Mafhaq is a city in the Sanaa Governorate of Yemen. The governorate lies in the country's highland interior, and its administrative capital is the city of Sanaa, which is also Yemen's national capital. The city of Sanaa itself is not part of the governorate, however; it forms the separate governorate of Amanat Al-Asemah, leaving the surrounding Sanaa Governorate as a distinct administrative unit.
The governorate covers an area of roughly 13,850 square kilometres and had a population of about 2,918,379 inhabitants as of 2004. It is a mountainous region: within its territory stands Jabal An-Nabi Shu'ayb, also known as Jabal Hadhur, the highest mountain in Yemen and in the Arabian Peninsula.
Mafhaq is one of the settlements located within this governorate, sharing the highland setting and administrative framework described above. Detailed published information about the city itself is limited.
