Trinidad is the capital city of Flores Department in southern Uruguay. With a population of 22,893, it serves as the administrative center of the region. The city was formerly known as Santísima Trinidad de los Porongos, or simply Porongos, reflecting its historical naming conventions.
The city's geography is closely tied to the Porongos stream, which flows nearby and has influenced both its naming and local identity. Inhabitants of Trinidad are called trinitarios or porongueros, the latter term deriving from the proximity to the Porongos stream and the city's historical association with that waterway.
