Charleston is the capital and most populous city in the U.S. state of West Virginia. It serves as the county seat for Kanawha County and is situated at the confluence of the Elk and Kanawha rivers.

As of the 2020 census, the city had a population of 48,864. The surrounding Charleston metropolitan area has an approximate population of 203,000 residents.
