The city was named after Bedford County, Tennessee, which served as the origin for many of its early inhabitants. While it experienced a period of decline in the early 20th century due to changes in transportation routes, it saw significant growth starting in the 1950s following the expansion of nearby military bases and defense plants.
Bedford is part of the Hurst-Euless-Bedford Independent School District.
