The city is situated a few miles north of the Ozark Scenic Riverways and is positioned near Montauk State Park, which contains the headwaters of the Current River. According to the 2020 census, Salem had a population of 4,608. While this population size qualifies it as a Class 3 city under Missouri Revised Statutes, the city has chosen to remain a Class 4 city.
