Amesbury is a city located in Essex County in northeastern Massachusetts, situated on the left bank of the Merrimack River near its mouth. The city is positioned upstream from Salisbury and across the river from Newburyport and West Newbury. According to the 2020 United States census, Amesbury had a population of 17,366 residents.
Historically, Amesbury was a farming and mill town, reflecting the region's traditional economic base. Today, the city is largely residential in character. Amesbury is one of the two northernmost towns in Massachusetts, occupying a significant position in the state's northeastern corner along the Merrimack River.
