Vincennes is a city in southwestern Indiana and the county seat of Knox County. Located on the lower Wabash River, it sits nearly halfway between Evansville and Terre Haute. According to the 2020 census, the city had a population of 16,759.
Founded in 1732 by French fur traders including François-Marie Bissot, Sieur de Vincennes, the city holds historical significance as Indiana's oldest continually inhabited European settlement and one of the oldest settlements west of the Appalachian Mountains. Vincennes served as the state's longest-serving territorial capital, reflecting its prominence during early American westward expansion.
