Juneau, officially known as the City and Borough of Juneau, serves as the capital of the U.S. state of Alaska. It is situated along the Gastineau Channel in the Southeast Alaska region.
The city was designated as the capital of Alaska in 1906 following a 1900 mandate by the U.S. Congress to move the government from Sitka. On July 1, 1970, the City of Juneau merged with the City of Douglas and the Greater Juneau Borough to form the current consolidated city-borough.
Due to its extensive land area, the municipality ranks as the second-largest in the United States by area. Its total size is larger than the states of Rhode Island and Delaware.
