Tunduma is a city located in Songwe Region, Tanzania, situated on the border between Tanzania and Zambia. It serves as a major crossing point for international transport, with border posts for both the Tanzam Highway and the TAZARA railway, which connect the two countries. The city is positioned 103 kilometers southwest of Mbeya and also functions as a junction for a tarmac road that extends westward through remote districts to Kasulu and Kibondo in northwestern Tanzania.
According to the 2022 census, Tunduma had a population of 219,309, making it a significant population center. The city is informally known as the "gateway to East Africa" due to its strategic position as a border crossing with neighboring Zambia. Nakonde, another border settlement, lies immediately across the border on the Zambian side. Tunduma is recognized as one of the most prominent border cities within SADCC (Southern African Development Community) countries.
