Usangi is a city in the Kilimanjaro region of northern Tanzania, located on the Pare Mountain ranges. It forms part of North Pare, alongside Ugweno to the north, and sits between Mgagao in Southern Pare to the south, Mwanga District to the west, and the Tanzania-Kenya border to the east. The city's position on the mountain ranges places it geographically proximate to Mount Kilimanjaro to the north.
Usangi has a significant historical legacy as the center of the Usangi Kingdom, which was ruled by the Sangi dynasty, whose rulers held the title Wafumwa (plural) or Mfumwa (singular). The kingdom's documented royal lineage begins with Mfumwa Sangiwa Makoko, who died in 1881, and continues through subsequent rulers until Mfumwa Shabani Mtengeti Sangiwa, who reigned until 1962. The traditional rule of the kingdom was briefly interrupted when a non-Sangi ruler, Mfumwa Sabuni, took power, but the Sangi lineage subsequently reclaimed control and restored Mfumwa Shabani to the throne. Traditional rule in Usangi was formally abolished in 1962, following Tanganyika's independence in 1961.
