Wageningen is a community resort and agricultural settlement located in the Nickerie District of Suriname, situated in the coastal region of West Suriname. The town is positioned at the harbour of the Nickerie River, across from the right estuary of the Maratakka River.
Founded in 1949, Wageningen was named after the Dutch city of Wageningen. The settlement became historically significant as the rice centre of Suriname, reflecting the region's agricultural importance and the country's development of rice cultivation during the mid-twentieth century.
