Jamestown is the capital city of the British Overseas Territory of Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha, situated on the northwestern coast of the island of Saint Helena in the South Atlantic Ocean. As the historic main settlement of the island, it serves as the administrative and commercial center of the territory.
The town was founded in 1659 when colonists from the English East India Company established a settlement on the island. It briefly fell under Dutch control in 1673 but was recaptured by English forces. Before the construction of a port at Rupert's Bay, Jamestown functioned as the island's only port and the hub of its road and communications network.
Much of Jamestown's architectural character derives from buildings constructed by the East India Company during the 18th century, many of which remain standing. These structures give the town a distinctive Georgian flavor that reflects its colonial heritage.
